Hello,
I am fixing to start nursing school and I didn't know if I should change my hair color or not. Currently, I have platinum blonde hair from the ears up, and chocolate brown underneath. I'm a little concerned about how blondes are stereotyped as "dumb" or "incompetent" and I don't want my peers or others thinking that I am less of an intelligent person just because of hair color. I am thinking about adding brown highlights or going all brunette. What are your suggestions? Should I keep my current hair color or change it? Also, did you or someone you know get treated differently based on their hair color, etc...?
Thank you for reviewing my post.
You keep telling yourself that.....If I am fixing to start nursing school on go a job interview I am going to avoid it.
That's your prerogative. Personally neither I, nor her patients and colleagues, had any problem with my cardiology preceptor who has 20 years of experience as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner using the phrase with colleagues and patients in her practice in Southern Virginia. It's actually a phrase that dates to the mid 1800's and was used all along the east coast. In fact, the OED has as one of its definitions of fix, phrases such as "to intend, to arrange, to prepare to". So, yes. It is an acceptable phrase.
OP, I would advise you to stay away from noticeable two-tones. It may not be a big problem, but most programs advise a natural-looking hair color. Perhaps just pick 1 color or get some subtle highlights. Or, if you really can't see the chocolate brown if your hair is down or pulled back it might not be a big deal. I managed to rock some pretty obscured purple highlights in my hair during my MSN program because you couldn't see them with my hair styled a certain way. Otherwise, you will be fine as long as your hair is neatly trimmed, pulled back (or cut short) and clean. Best of luck to you in beginning your career.
If you are the only one laughing, that's a good sign you're not funny.
I cracked myself up,that's all that counted for me after the crap day I had.Am still a big proponent of professional attire, grooming and speech for students in class or clinical and certainly on a job interview. As a side note,I've been on this board for a lot of years and am not really known for being mean.I have an opinion and that's what this board is about, correct?
Natural blonde here, but I still color it blonde! (just a warmer shade)
Oh, and I have earned higher than the standards in my clinical rotations and not to mention I've got a GPA that fits into the national nursing honors society (Sigma Theta Tau) so let the haters hate, be you. If your hair makes you feel insecure at all, then you figure out which shade will make you feel you, wonderful, confident ready to learn! you go girl.

On a side note, I read this weeks ago and came back to comment on it today because it has bothered me so much how rude people are to you! This is a website for ALL NURSES and you'd think you could ask a question without being ridiculed.
