Nursing Specialties Question

Published

I'm applying to a nursing summer program for highschool students and one of the questions on the application says to list three nursing specialties that I'm interested in learning about during the program. I just want to double check that the following are nursing specialties:

Pediatrics, Emergency, Operating Room

Also, could I include CRNA or is that not a specialty but more of an advanced thing?

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

All of the above are legitimate specialties in the nursing profession.

Even the CRNA designation is a specialty in advanced practice nursing. Good luck!

Specializes in ER, Cardiac Tele/ICU Stepdown.

Hey, all of those are great areas to get experience in! If you are interested in being a CRNA, I recommend trying to get into the ICU because after you become a nurse, you must have at least a years experience there before you go to anesthesia school. Or, if you want to see a CRNA in action, why not try the operating room?

Not only are they specialties, but you could also use this very website to look over the MANY specialties available in the Forums section under Specialties.

You can read posts from people who currently work in these areas, as well as areas you might not have even known existed (perfect for a high school student just finding out about what's out there in nursing!)

Best of luck to you :)

Thank you all for your suggestions and help. I decided to write down pediatric nursing, operating room nursing + CRNA, and critical care nursing. I will be sure the check out the specialties forums to see what it is really like in all the different specialties.

Our CRNA's love to try to monopolize students when they visit the OR :)

Good Luck!

I know a lot of folks on allnurses hate the Johnson & Johnson campaign:chuckle BUT... their website does list tons of nursing specialties. Personally, I like their free posters, too! Don't anybody yell at me, now! :chair:
