Nursing Shortage...

Nurses General Nursing

When I got into nursing school a couple of years ago, there were articles in the news almost everyday about nursing shortage.... how we desperately need more nurses and what not.

After graduation and 2 months of searching and applying for jobs, I wonder.....

Is there really a nursing shortage?? If so, where?

You're right, location may be the issue here (in CA). The market is saturated with experienced nurses from all over the country and new grads like me don't stand a chance... That makes me very sad.

Gee, to check out the publications offered to nursing students, you would think California is suffering. I'm on the East Coast and there is always ads from CA hospitals begging for nurses.

The issue is that most of the jobs that you see posted for CA are for nurses with experience. If you have two years of experience, you can get a job almost anywhere.

But as a new grad, there is a limit to the facilities that will hire, as well as the ones that give a good, solid orientation.

Then add in the areas that have large numbers of nursing students, and as mentioned above, if you did not do a nurse externship or work there as a student, then it is harder to get your foot in the door. Supply of new grads in the Bay Area far exceeds the number of openings that there are.

There are many other areas that do have shortages in this country, and they can be looked into as well. Even other areas in CA, but the Bay Area is one of the higher paying areas, so also more wish to work in that area.

I just saw an ad that UCSF is hiring, in some areas, and they are having a new grad program.:D

Thank you. I'll check with UCSF.

Apparently, Stanford doesn't hire new grads in Med/Surg/Trauma ICU, ED, CVICU and Intermediate ICU.

Do most new grads start in Med/Surg?
