Nursing schools in central valley in ca

Published

I am a new student at Merced JC taking my pre-reqs for RN. I am planning on getting my AS here at the JC then transferring to Stanislaus State Univ to get my BSN. Does anyone know how long it takes to get into the nursing program here at Merced College? Is there a good chance of getting hired out here in the valley after you get your BSN degree? Also, what jobs can i get as a AS degree while going to school for the BSN? Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi there,

Just graduated from CSUS...did my pre-reqs at Merced, too:coollook: When I applied at the JC, there was a waiting list, so I applied directly to Stan State, which has a merit based program. I got in the first time. I don't know what Merced is doing now, but talk to the head of their nursing department for good information.

With your associates degree in nursing, you can work in any hospital...I'm not sure how much difference the BSN makes in the beginning. If you can extern when it is time, that will help you get your foot in the door. My suggestion would be to apply in Merced, Modesto, Fresno and wherever else you can think of, just to improve the chance of getting in somewhere.

Welcome to the beginning of a whole new world!!

So what youre saying to do is after I do my pre-reqs at Merced JC, while Im waiting to get into the nursing, to apply at the universities in the meantime? If this is what you mean, I didnt know you can do that, and thanks for the reply. Did you have a good counselor at Merced, because the one I have I feel like hes not interested or something. I would like to get one that knows I am serious and can help me out. Thanks again.

When your pre-reqs are finished, you can start applying at the other JC's and universities, however universities have some requirements for transfer and usually some extra pre-reqs (Stats and O-Chem come to mind). Stan State will let you apply with the transfer classes/pre-reqs in progress. Fresno has both a JC and Fresno State, so there are two there. I would get online and find out what the requirements are for all of them and see where you are.

As for a counselor...I really didn't use one. I made my own plan. On the bottom of a paper, I put the classes needed to apply to the nursing program. Above those, I put the classes needed for those and on up. When I was finished, I had a semester by semester plan with each class leading to the next. It worked out nicely for me, but it is how my brain works. You might ask someone in the nursing department who they would recommend for a counselor.

I'm happy to answer any questions...I am working (thank you God), so I might not always get right back to you, but I will get back...you can PM me anytime

I am also currently attending Merced JC. I just have the three prereq. biology's to finally apply for the program. Great to know I am not alone. Whenever you need to talk about school just email me. I don't have any info or know anybody with info, but we can definitely get it together.

Chiewy98, thanks for replying. I dont know to email anyone from here. Please email me back to. Yes I am just starting at merced JC. I am signed up for english, bio, and math this fall 09 so Im new too. So are you finished with your pre-reqs then?

Everything but the 3 biology's. I am registered for Physiology and Anatomy. Thinking if I don't get in merced, I have to do 2 prereq's to transfer to CSU.

Annisme, Im sorry but Im confused lol. So I get my pre-reqs done at Merced JC then apply at the other Universities for the nursing program? Or I do my pre-reqs and the nursing program here at Merced JC then get my AS degree then transfer to a university? Sorry I dont understand, and I cant PM you I guess because im new here.

The program @ MJC is pretty hard to get in. If you do get in you can get your AS and take the nuclex through Merced. If not you have to reapply every semester and complete with all applicants every semester.

I just hear it's easier to get into Turlock or Fresno. I believe they can take a bigger class.

Just concentrate on getting your prereq's done.

You can do your prereqs at a JC and then apply to the nursing program at Fresno State or another university. You don't need to do the nursing program at the JC too. I go to Fresno State and our nursing program is 3 years long and each semester is structured to where you take your classes with the same 70 or so people all 6 semesters. You can finish up your GE throughout the program - but it's easier to have the majority done, and you have to have the 8 prereqs done to apply. Oh and you get it based on your GPA for those 8 classes. (Chem, Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology, Speech, English, Math, and Critical Thinking).

You can apply for the fall semester from March 1-31. Oh and you don't have to have those 8 classes finished until June 15, so you can still be finishing them up in the Spring semester.

Good luck! I really like going to Fresno State and their Nursing program - I'm graduating in May! :)
