Nursing school... maybe not? Should we move?

Well, there may be a glitch in my nursing school plans...

My husband has pretty much been offered a good job, paying over twice what he makes now (which is only about $10K/year), with benefits, company truck, etc.

The catch is... we'd have to move to a town 60 miles from here to get it. That particular town doesn't have a BSN program, and is over 120 miles away from the BSN program I had planned on applying to... it is where the rad tech program I applied to (and got in) is located, though.

I'm torn about whether or not he should take the job.. I have so much family support and help with my kids here. My oldest goes to a fantastic private school, and my youngest has a sitter who loves him like a Grandma. Plus, if I move.. I could change and try to go back into the rad tech program.. or, I just don't know. There's really no options for my husband getting a good job like that in the town we live in now (VERY small), and I don't know if I could afford to go to school in 2004 unless he got a better job anyway. I'm thinking of just having him move down there, and the boys and I stay here until I finish school. That's 3 years away, though, and then we'd have two households worth of bills.

I'm very torn and can't seem to make a decision. Anyway, if you pray - say a prayer that I'll have some direction... or if you have any advice, my ears/eyes are wide open! :)

Thanks! You guys are the best. :)

Wow thats tough..

I'd stick where you have the family support system.. family will get you through times when money alone cannot.

Oh wow, ya I can see your problem. I am not sure what I would do either. I will definatly keep you in prayer, you will make the right decision I am sure. And whatever decision you DO make, dont look back, just go for it.

My husband is applying for rad school as well. Do you have any good links (like allnurses, etc) about that?

Thanks Agent. My Dad (who also happens to be my boss's superior) is my number one support and my biggest fan (I'm so blessed)... I told him about it and he said it's up to me, but that if I moved I'd be going away from all the support I ever had. I know I couldn't have done all that I have now without them, as my husband hasn't been too reliable in the past (for those who don't know, he's a recovering alcoholic, EEK)

Thanks Marilyn. I'll be sure to keep yall posted.. he goes for a 2nd interview Monday, so we'll see what comes out of that.

All the rad sites that I found weren't near as classy (LOL) or active as allnurses, but you can try http://www.radiography.com - There's a lot of great people there if you can wade through the thousands of "where is a rad school in my state" posts. There are also tech discussion boards at http://www.auntminnie.com

Angela posts here and at radiography (she's an RT student), so if she reads this maybe she'll be able to give you some more links. (she's a sweetie) :)

I'm still torn between rad tech and nursing. I think I would love to be an RT - I shadowed in a department for a while and was fascinated, especially by the CV stuff. But then... there are many more opportunities for advanced degrees, etc in nursing. Plus I could get a BSN in the same time it'd take me to get an AS in rad. For now I'm a nursing major, so we'll see. :)

Wow, when it rains...it pours. This is a really tough decision. I don't know what I do either. Just pray that G'd will guide you to the right decision.

Hey, manna, that's a tough decision. Let me tell you my story...maybe it will help?

My husband decided to go back to work for the company he used to work for 3 years ago (this was about Mayish that he decided to do this). He couldn't find a job that paid him good enough, and he really did like working in drywall.

Well, on most days he works in Delano...which is probably close to 100-120 miles away (I don't know because I don't drive it. All I know is it's outside of Bakersfield and it takes 2 hrs to get to Bakersfield).

At first he had to drive his own car there. It was costing a lot in gas, wear on the vehicle, and time. But, he ended up getting a company truck.

We briefly thought about moving to Bakersfield so it would be easier for him. They have a CSU campus there, too, that has a nursing program. BUT it is completely different from the one I am starting on Mon. Quarter system, different requirements, etc. His father pointed out to him (dh) that I am committed for the next 3 years to this program here in Fresno and to my education. So, we decided to stay.

Nearly every day he drives to Delano...but he has a company car and a gas card now.

Is this something your husband could do? I know it takes a lot of time to drive that far, but if all the good stuff is in the town you are in, it might be a small price to pay?

Good Luck, manna, with whatever you decide!:kiss

Hey manna...I'm in kinda the same boat.

My hubby got offered a job making roughly 3 times as much as he is now. The catch? It's back in California. We're in OHio.

We're currently talking about him moving out there & working while I go to school. It *could* be possible to do, but would really bite big time to live that far away. But, our finances are in critical condition & it would help loads. Plus, I would be able to fly out to visit between school terms and he would be able to come back to visit as well. We've got a few months to decide (the job won't start until January)

I totally feel for you! It is a TOUGH decision to make!

My husband wouldn't mind commuting at all... but the stipulation for taking the job involves moving, sadly. The job involves dealing with accounts in this particular town, being "on call," and the company doesn't want him putting 100+ miles on their vehicle a day because of not living locally. :(

Thanks for the suggestion, that thought had crossed both our minds. :(

Good luck making your decision, Amy.. I'll be thinking of you. :)

I think the main thing that's resistant in my mind is my family.... well, and possibly the school/daycare situation. All the other stuff I feel like would work out...

I still say stay and tough it out.. try to get the most aid you can, rely on your family a lot for help. Grit your teeth and kick everyone's ass.

You'll be fine.

I have known couples that work in separate towns. He could always come home for the weekends..?

I'm thinking that's going to be the most reasonable solution. Like I said, I'll keep yall posted... it's a pretty flexible job (kind of sets his own hours), so we could work it out somehow.

I'm really, really, REALLY hoping that if I can get in the nursing program next fall I can qualify for something like that IHL scholarship.. (more crossed fingers on that one)

My best friend and I went out for drinks the other night and she said she thought I'd make a wonderful nurse, which I found very comforting. Finally - some reassurance from someone locally! :)

Thanks again.. :)

Thanks Agent, you're probably right. Knowing me, I wouldn't be satisfied - I'd want to be the one reading the films, not taking them. LOL :)
