Nursing school loans

Published

HI, just wanted to ask where there maybe alternative loans out there for some extra money for nursing school. Have the stafford etc need something else. Maybe needing to get another car and pay for child care etc. Work 40 hrs a week on the floor driving 60 miles round trip to work and to school and back is another 70 some miles, so I don't know how much my 8yr old care will take and not to mention the gas prices. Have been doing web seaches without much luck. Any advice.....post to board or PM me. Thanks in advance

Try either Wells Fargo or Bank One. You can apply online. Someone here posted that they got one through Wells Fargo and that it went through rather quickly for them.

If you are willing to give 2 years of your time after graduation, you might want to check out this program:

Thanks for the replies, already aware of the hrsa program and I will be one og the first applications into them when they are available in December.

I don't know how thoroughly you've investigated scholarship possibilities, but many states offer scholarships/loans to their residents for nursing school -- in some cases, you can work off the loans instead of paying them back.

Im looking on the website-which program are you speaking of exactly I cant find it??

I am currently a senior in a BSN program and I also have staffords but needed more help, so I took out an alternative loan. I applied for mine through citibank and have been very happy with them so far. Their website for student loans is:

www.studentloan.com

Also looking into different scholarship oppertunities through your school or through outside programs is always good though this can take a lot of time and effort.

I just recently had a baby and am planning on going back to school for nursing, I stopped once I got closer to my due date. However I was planning on taking a 8mth course in Medical Coding and billing so I can get a job in a hosp here that will pay for my education as long as I work for them for 2 yrs. Anyone have any input on medical coding and can I make a decent income? with the baby I could really use the better pay while going to school.

Medical coding jobs are getting difficult to find. Most have been outsourced overseas (primarily to India). I am not saying it is impossible - alot will depend on the demand in your area. Just not the large number of jobs that schools say there are.

What do you think about medical transcription?

My SIL is a transcriptionist. She was making $14 an hr a year or 2 ago. But she has been doing it for at least 5 years. I don't know how easy it is to find openings. I think it only took her 1 or 2 semesters at a tech college.

Thanks for the info. I signed up for coding only because I had a little experiance in it, Ive seen a few jobs for it here in Columbus at Grant Hosp. I just want to get on at a Hospital that will pay for my nursing classes or at least help. I have no previous experiance in the medical field besides the few months I temped as a coder but may be I should look into the transcription if it will be a better chance at getting a job. Ive been a Cust Serv Rep for 7 yrs at a pension fund. Hmmmm. Not sure , I'll have to think on this one. Thanks for all the info guys.
