Nursing school grants

My step-daughter has recently decided to go into Nursing School. I haven't done this whole grant thing for a long time, and it's hard to search through all that info and decide which is best. Any of you out there had any good experience with particular grants for Nursing schools? I have all the general info, but wondered if anyone could give me any inside info on ones you had a good experience with. She is graduating HS this year, and has a B average in school now, if that matters. We're just getting application forms from her school counselor. Nothing all that helpful from them except the forms to fill out. Any experiences would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! :)

For me, the first thing I had to do was submit my FAFSA http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/, you guys can fill out/submit online anytime after Jan 1--first come first serve money wise so do it early. They must be submitted by March 1 here in IN to be considered for state grants-but each state is different. She can choose several different schools and they will send her information as to what they will offer in addition to grant offers she may receive from Fed/State.

This past yr I heard right away but the yr before that it wasn't until July and I was so depressed thinking I didn't qualify--that's a hard wait! :chuckle

yes i was snotty to obnurseheather. if she found that my statement is incorrect, she could just tell it to me straight. hey that is wrong. i would appreciate that rather than her post that is obviously mocking my little knowledge about nursing school requirements.

The next time you log in, and forever afterwards, you won't see any of this person's posts. I highly recommend using this feature.

Hmmmmm..... I wasn't mocking you. I was simply confused because both in my own experiences, and in the experiences of the many students that pass through my unit every week, I have never heard of it being a requirement to first obtain CNA certification.

Had you not jumped down my throat, I probably would have said, "gee mmnursewannabe, that's interesting. Tell me about your program. Where are you from? etc, etc..."

It is difficult to understand the tone of a poster by only their written word. I suggest you remember that before you assume that I was "obviously mocking" you.

I am a first year ADN student and researched extensively for grant money this past year. There are a couple things I can recommend.

First and foremost, complete the FAFSA forms. There are some scholarships/grants (the Student Nurse Association, for one) that require the FAFSA assessment of your financial status before they will consider you.

Once FAFSA is completed, I recommend getting a book from the library called something like "4000 Scholarships" (can't remember exactly). You may find something in there that can be applied for.

Do form a working relationship with the financial aid office of the school your step-daughter will be attending. As well as giving you information about the federal low interest loans, they will be able to direct you to organizations and foundations in your community that provide funds for local students. I ended up getting two local grants this way, paying for complete tuition/books for a year.

I filled out many, many, many applications for scholarships/grants and wrote essay after essay, got letter after letter of recommendation, sent "official" transcripts (I have a 4.0 and high SAT scores, which helped) and jumped through many hoops, but in the end I did get some assistance. since you understand the complexity of not being able to decipher the emotions in the posts then you should have clarified what you really feel in your first post rather than posting this

:confused: hmmm... not where i went to school

and what is the point of that post? is that any help at all? does that even answer the question of the thread starter? do not try to appear innocent now. if you really do not mean to mock me in anyway, you should have ask right away where am i going to school etc. you are very typical.

Tried to get them for my 22 y.o. son for nursing school. He made to much money at 14,000 year full time. Go figure......

SO WTF IS THE PROBLEM WITH HEATHER'S REPLY??? THE ONLY MOCKING THAT WENT ON IS WHEN you USED "missy". In addition, you then go to some off the wall stereotyping comment and say "you are very typical" yet give no reference as to what she is typical OF.

Lay off the name calling. It is rude an uncalled for.

this thread was someone asking for advice about grants, your original post does not even address this--so I think we're all were a little confused how they relate. Please let it go and let's give OB/GYN NP some advice for her step-daughter since that is after the purpose of this thread.

Ok, defenitley start with the FAFSA, check with your states' Board of Nursing and they might have some info for any new "Pilot" programs there are some great ones in California that will pay up to $4000 per year of an ADN program so long as the student agrees to get their BSN within five years of graduating from the ADN program, and so forth. Also check out the site Discovernursing.com and they have some links and info about grants, and take some time to visit the schools' financial aid office where she is applying. I am currently in the process of all this too - do your homework and I'm sure you'll be able to find something you(she) qualifies for. You also might want to contact some of your local large hospitals to inquire about loan repayment, just in case you have to that route. Best of luck!
