Nursing School Admissions.....

New to the site.....

I am really struggling with trying to find a nursing school that will accept me. I already have my bachelor's degree in business (graduated in dec 2006). After taking a couple years off, I decided to go back to school for nursing. I have taken most of my biological science classes (AP, micro, etc). Unfortunately, my undergrad GPA from my previous degree was around a 2.8-2.9. Is there any way that I can find a school that will admit me starting this fall? One of the schools I spoke with said I would need to take more classes to raise my GPA, but I don't NEED anymore classes.... What should I do?

I was in the same position myself a couple of years ago. I decided to suck it up and retake some classes to raise my GPA. I also applied for Acedemic Fresh start, which removes any failing grade from your record. The only catch is that the classes have to be at least 10 years old. This program veries from state to state, so maybe that is something you can look into. I just applied and got accepted into nursing school but i retook several classes. Hope that helps

i am sorry i was in the same place. i just got accepted for aug 2010. the school i applied has a one year waiting list so i couldn't make it sooner than that. the thing is i did not take any more classes to improve my gpa. i don't know where you applying if moving is an option the school is in cinccinati, ohio.

I was in the same situation. Its funny that I ended up as a certified teacher in several areas but some schools still wanted to look at cum gpa as well as pre-req gpa. I would go to the BON of the state that you are looking into and see what schools are there and just go down the list and ask questions. You could also look into for-profit colleges, they are more expensive but there are no waitlists and will usually transfer all pre-req's and dont look at cumm gpa. The only thing is that you have to do well on the entrace tests. Lastly, you could go the LPN-RN route. I have a couple of friends that went this route. Once they finished with the PN program its was "easier" to get into the RN program because not many people were going that route. There are many options for people with low gpa's from a previous bachelor's degree you just have to work a little harder to find your oprtions. Good luck.

Check out all the schools in your area. Each school is different. Most of your major institutions will look at your overal GPA. Here, my CC only looked at the grades in the pre-reqs. My current overal GPA is 2.7 but my pre-reqs is 3.7. You need to see what you can find.

As a last resort, you could check out those 'for profit' career colleges and see if you can get your nursing studies done there. (But make sure you check out accreditation and credit transfer abilities!) Good luck!

Getting in to any nursing program is very difficult, but any college that has a Sept. start date may start taking applications in June, so you could take some classes between now and then. To bring up your GPA you could take classes that may be helpful should you get into a nursing program, such as Death & Dying, Nutrition, Intro to Health Care, Psych classes that could relate, etc. Even if you don't need them, you may later find them helpful and perhaps they can help you bring your GPA up. Good luck! :)
