I have not worked in the hospital setting for about 13 years and am looking for a refresher course. I live in Southeast Ohio (not near any major colleges, universities or teaching hospitals). For the past 8 years I have been working for a home medical supply company - doing home visits which include equipment checks and respiratory assessments on the patients. I would like to re-enter the hospital in the next year as my children are in high school and I am looking to help pay college expenses. Any ideas where to look for courses. I have done a quick internet search but really haven't come up with much. Any advice will be greatly appreciated!!

Hello Ohio,

I'm from Illinois and just completed an RN refresher course. I started

looking into taking a refresher course since I've been out of the

hospital for six years. Try calling community colleges-that's where

almost all of them take place. Call the workforce development

department.

They usually have them two or three times a year. I started calling

thenearest one's and than going 50-75 miles away. There are only a

few community colleges that offer them and they last about 10

to 12 weeks; with clinicals once a week at a nearby hospital. If

there is nothing close to you may want to think about traveling to

the closest place that offers one.

The cost is anywhere between $1,300-$1,800for the 10-12 weeks.

This includes theory class's and your clinical day only. Something else

you will need to know: What are the preregs: It will cost more to have

your own ; books; uniforms; and up-to-date immunizations mandated by the hospital you will be doing your clinicals at. Good Luck, Santefe

Both ND State Nurses' Association and SD State University offer on-line refreshers. They include a clinical requirement, which you set up on your own. If you plan to enroll in either course, please make sure you have a facility lined up in advance which will accomodate your clinical time. There have been a few posters here who have completed their coursework and then been unable to schedule clinical time. Good luck!

It is a listing of all the state approved CE providers. Since the BON doesn't single out refresher courses like some other state boards do, I would try calling around to some of the nurse recruiters at the hospitals in your area and ask them who offers refresher courses. Other likely providers would be colleges with already established nursing programs as a CE offering. Look for nursing job fairs in your area to go to. They will have a concentration of nurse and hospital recruiters of which someone will have an answer to your question. You might, as a chance, get in touch with the Ohio Nurses Association and see if they have any information on refresher courses. I understand your situation with your location, but if you could find a course in Columbus that was only one day a week for a couple of weeks, would you be willing to do that? Have you approached any of the hospitals about employment yet? Perhaps just a 30 hours med/surg review course by one of the national continuing education providers will be sufficient. Ohio BON recognizes these providers when a licensee out of state uses them for CE credit (I know because I've lived out of state a lot and get my CEUs from out of state providers all the time in order to keep my Ohio license).

Check with all of them - I am in AR, but I found a hospital based refresher course that is only $325. When you complete it you are offered a job there, but not required to work there at all. Very reasonable amount of $ IMO. I start mine next week. Good luck!

if you are anywhere near the PA border (beaver county) the community college of beaver county has a refresher course. I took it several years ago when I had been out of nursing for 7 years. I went right back to work in the hospital after taking that course.
