i have heard of all kinds of recruitment efforts, but the bottom line is--what kind of working conditions will she be faced with? How long does she have to stay at the hospital to reap the rewards? There is often a catch with these things, and handing out gifts does not make for a good job. At the end of the day, you may have your new car and bonus, but have to care for 15 patients a shift, have to beg and grovel for overtime (which is mandatory), and so on.

These are not outstanding recruitment efforts. Outstanding recruitment efforts take the form of offering a job with good pay, good benefits, and safe and decent working conditions for both the nurse and patients. That is the bottom line.

The gifts, the bonuses, the hype--these are not cures for the shortage. They are short term eye candy, which are meaningless if these hospitals do not improve anything else. Hospitals have been offering rewards, bonuses, and so on, since the 1970s, every time a shortage crops up. And the reason we are having shortages right now is because working conditions have deteriorated, not improved. If in 1970, hospitals took it upon themselves to elevate nursing to a highly respected well paid profession--and nurses themselves stood up for themselves, their rights, their patients, and demanded decent pay, respect and safe working conditions--there would be no shortage right now.:kiss

In Las Cruces, New Mexico (yes, that's in the US), the hospital was offering RN's, LPN's and CNA's $5,000 sign-on bonuses and $5,000 to help purchase a house. It was in our paper.......

One hospital in Florida offered a recruitment bonus of $600/mo. for a 2 year contract ($14,400). The competing hospital counteroffered $650/mo. ($15,600) for a 2 year contract. You can guess what happened. The local newspaper called it the Great Nurse Trade-off.

I know of a hospital that offered $15,000 sign-on. Catch: it's a 4 year sign on. Yikes! I hardly know what I am doing next month, much less 4 years from now.

Lets Clarify one thing Yes I am easy, but I am very expensive.
