Nursing programs that don't require Chemistry?!

Published

I'm applying to 2 programs next year, neither of which require Chemistry! Anyone experienced this? Believe me though, I'm not complaining...I hated Chem in high school and probably still would...lol

What I've seen is that completion of High School Chem with a grade of C or better is required before acceptance into nursing programs, but no chem class is part of the curriculum. Is that the case with the schools you are looking at?

Even if the degree program doesn't require it, I would suggest taking a college level chemistry course. A firm understanding of chemistry is pretty essential for a firm understanding of physiology.

if a college level chem course is intimidating and it's been a while since High School..lot's of colleges offer HS level Chem. A great refresher and as Triquee points out an understanding of basic Chemistry is important for understanding Physiology in fact most A&P courses require completion of high school level chem with a grade of C or better as a pre req to taking the class for that very reason.

My BSN at the University required Organic and Inorganic. They year I applied I also applied to the JC which only required one chem class; the year after that they stopped requiring chem for all JCs in the state of California. They still require two chems at the BSN level.

My school in CO didn't require Chem. It is required and Organic Chem for the BSN though.

My school in WA where I did most of my pre reqs required unorganic and organic chem though so I have already taken both classes.

Well....I'm in Physiology right now and am doing well in the class. I actually did try to get into Chem this sem. too (thinking it would help me for Phys and Micro) but it was full. Still not sure if I should take it anyway....

I took chem last with Micro. I thought it was helpful to take with Micro. I took physiology first before Anatomy which was kind of hard, but I did not feel like taking chem first would make it any easier...anatomy yes.

Chemistry, both high school and college level were required when I attended 'boot camp nursing' and integrated collegiate pursuits in a diploma school, fifty years ago!.

Later, in BSN and MSN programs, both organic and inorganic were included in the curriculum. I added physics, as those days were the dawn of exploration into the fascinating phenomena of bio-physics and the advent of previously unimagined diagnostic devices.

I think one should have chem on board to facilitate understanding of the chemical elements of the human body, if not just the basics. Bottom line physiology, we humans are all about electro-bio-chemistry.

Wow chemistry is such a PITA here! Of the schools I want to apply to I have to take a bunch of diff. chem classes. Some want ochem some want inochem some want both, some want gen. chem, some want chem for health majors. There may even be more. Ugh, it's so annoying!! IDK why I can't just take a survey of chemistry course to meet all the reqs. So, in other words, no, I haven't heard of that! LOL

If there is any possibility that you will obtain a BSN in the future, (and there should be), you should take two semesters of chem now and get it over with. The majority of, if not all, BSN programs require two semesters of chem, inorganic and organic, some require a separate semester of biochem if it is not included in the organic chem class. If you take the courses now you will be doing yourself a favor.

Let me know when you get to cellular respiration and the sodium-potassium pump =P
