Nursing...a profession or just a job

Published

Hello. I am a nursing student and I have been given an assignment to write a 1500 word essay about whether I think nursing is a profession or just a job. I know how I feel about it, but I have to have sources to back up my statements. Anyway, I would love to use this website as a source and was wondering if some of you could share your opinions with me.

Thank You!

When I graduated from school, I gave the farewell speech...and one thing I said in my speech that will forever be in my mind was that "I will remember that every patient I have is someone's mother, father, brother or sister....and the day that I forget that, is the day that I leave this profession". So in my opinion, it's a career and a profession and they day that I get up and say "I don't like my 'job' " or "I can't do this another day" is the day I walk away from nursing and find something else. I can't see that coming any time soon, but it is something that I will hold to until the end of time.

When I started nursing school I was doing it because I could get a job anywhere in the United States..there has been a nursing shortage for a long time..since I was going to do alo of traveling this was important. However, my first day walking in the hospital on my first job as a RN I was saying a prayer. The great thing about nursing is tht it can be just a job or a great career but the best ones are the ones that enjoy what they are doing and feel like they can make a difference.

There are days when it is "just a job" but then there are days when you've worked your heart out and a patient says thanks and it makes it more than that. My Dad has always said that a nurse is just made that way and that if you haven't got "it" then you should find something else to do. I don't know if that's true but it makes me feel good!

Consider also that you can have opinions as sources or you can have objective facts...or both.

i was a hospital nurse for 40 years and i got to the point of "i can't do this another day" about 20 years ago. i didn't leave because i felt trapped knowing that i wouldn't be able to get another job with the same pay and benefits. now that i'm retired and just do part time home health, i finally feel like a nurse who can really give her pts excellent care. i'm happy going to work for the first time in my life :yelclap:

Nursing itself is a profession. Where you work and what you do day to day is a job.
