I believe that this is one reason nursing tends to be undervalued, and is seen as a cost center.
I believe if charges were done according to the nursing care given, it would make nursing care much more visible, to both the public and to administration.

Nursing will remain invisible, indervalued, and underpaid, until we bill for our services. As it stands now, we show up in the "expense column", and our professional practice is rolled in with the housekeeping, laundry, and the complimentary roll of toilet paper. JMHO and my NY $0.02.

Not too long ago, an experienced nurse mentioned this very topic and she said that at one point, nursing care and procedures were billed.
Did hospitals bill for nursing care in the past??
