Nursing Prerequisites.....How Hard?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I have not applied yet to my nursing school, but I was wondering how hard the prerequisites are? I have to take English Comp, General Psychology, Sociology, A&P I & II, Microbiology, Growth & Dev. of Child, Adolescent & Adult, Problem Solving for Health Care Prov., Drug Therapy for Health Care Prov., Intermediate Computer Apps & Principles of Nutrition. Are all these classes hard? I'm not real concerned with English Comp. & Intermediate Computer Apps. I think I'll do good in those classes, but how hard are the others? Oh, and by the way, I have 2 kids (2 year old & 6 week old) and planning to work 24 hours per week. I am married and hubby works 3rd shift. Thanks!

No offense, but I think limiting your time to when your kids nap isn't going to do it. You may be able to get away with that while taking your prereqs. Once you get into the program, I would recommend quitting work and taking out a loan. Some may say not to, but I worked during the program and it was a huge struggle. And my children were older, much more independent.

If you pay attention and study u will do great. i would deff. pay attention in math because as you move on to the next math classes you use the material you have been taught from previous classes. The material doesnt go away. and plus if you have to take chemistry, math supposedly plays a big part.

Studying does differ for each person, like racquetmom said, I agree - Im a morning person and love getting up and getting things done, others stay up all night, I personally burn out at like 9pm. One thing that has always worked for me was studying a little bit every day. Taking maybe 10-15 minutes to review notes daily keeps info fresh in your mind much easier than cramming all at once at the last minute.

Pre-reqs are easy compared to nursing school. If you can figure out what to do there, then you should be able to get through school. Nursing school is time consuming. You have no life. Literally. You can try to work, but you will end paying for that later. Loans... well, I wouldn't recommend getting them, but if that's what you have to do, then do it. Someone said earlier that you have to find what works for you. You will need a lot of support if you hope to get through this. I have said so many times before, nursing school is the absolute hardest thing that I have ever done in my entire life. I am a total nerd, always had good grades, graduated honors in everything I did. As a "career student" (as my husband calls me) I thought that I could do this nursing thing with no problem. Yeah... 1 point can mean the difference between a $30hr job and a $9 hr. job. That is huge. Luckily, I am getting a second chance... some were not so lucky. My point is this... if you want this, do all that you can to succeed. Study every chance you get, take notes with you everywhere, I would even pay for a sitter for a few hours just so you can have uninterrupted study time. Think of pre-reqs as a trial run for nursing school. What you learn in those classes will be built upon when you get into the program. Good luck!

For Anatomy & Physiology plan to study a minimum of 14 hrs a week. Same for Microbiology. They are not difficult, but you have to be very-focused and pay attention to details.

The pre req's are not that hard! it just takes a lot of time and dedication to study and stay organized! you've got this! don't give up! :)
