nursing prerequisite help please

It depends, why do you think you need to retake them? Does your school require certain grades on pre req's? Do they work on a competitive scale like a point system? If so then I would retake the classes you received the C's in, a B isn't that horrible but then it depends if the social sciences are pre req's are core classes, can you give a little more info?

I have a question.
I took 3 social science classes and got a "C" but for my anatomy and physiology, i got a "B".
Should i retake the social science classes or the anatomy classes?
Your answer would be much appreciated.

Query is hard to answer because you didn't say or know what your school will do with multiple grades from the same class.

If the program looks at your culmative GPA as well as your average from the pre-reqs those low grades will bring you down on both counts. However if the program allows you to repeat class or classes with only the highest score counting, that is another story.

Best thing to do is contact whatever school you are planning on attending and seek their academic advice.

That being said a "B" in A&P is pretty decent, and I for one wouldn't bother retaking it again. Social science classes if not required for pre-nursing will only hurt our overall GPA. If they are required you risk using up any allowable "repeats" on classes that are pretty much small beer. This means you will have to pass and pass well any future courses that are likely to be much more difficult.

If the "C" grades will get you into a or the nursing program your main problem then is what they have done to your GPA. You can get your overall GPA up by taking three or four credit classes and landing nothing less than an A-.

Thank you for your reply. The classes i got "C" in (3 social science classes) are hurting my GPA, thats why i want to retake them. I live in Portland oregon if that helps. I don't have any particular nursing school in mind. I plan on applying to numerous nursing schools in portland oregon. My main reason for retaking the classes is to increase my GPA.

We're all working in the blind as to a certain extent are you because without a particular program's requirements for entry no one can say exactly how you should proceed.

If your aim is to merely get your overall GPA up then as one stated before take any three or four credit class and get "A" grades.

Using the nursing program at University of Portland as an example:

Acceptance into the upper division nursing major is dependent upon:

A cumulative GPA of 2.7 or above.
A grade of C or better in NRS 101, NRS 202 and NRS 203.
A cumulative GPA of 2.7 or above in the required sciences with a minimum grade of C in each required science course. Pass/No Pass grades are not allowed.
Students may repeat one required upper division science course one time.
Completion of all the prerequisite course work. Lower division credit may be taken in any accredited college or university.

So all one needs in theory on paper at least is a cumlative B- GPA in the required science courses with nothing less than a "C". You also need a minimum overall cumulative GPA of 2.7.

Now where does it mention a minimum grade for social science classes so retaking them wouldn't be good use of money or time IMHO. I'd take other core, related or even elective courses instead and again making sure to get an "A" or the very least "A-".

Others look at only prenursing classes. Other schools want a certain cumulative and a certain science GPA. Please do yourself a favor and go to each schools website to learn their requirements. Go to info sessions also to learn more about program requirements.

Thought it was only a local NYC thing, but am finding more and more programs switching to two GPA requirements for entry. One cumulative GPA of all undergrad work, the other pre-nursing and or sciences. Am also seeing a slow move away from the old Psych, Social, Eng and so forth 100 courses in prenursing be equally weighted as science and perhaps math. Also am seeing many more ADN and ABSN programs looking for TEAS,NLN or SAT scores along with pre-nursing sequence as part of the admissions process.

It would be better to make a decision after finding out the impact on the program(s) you are considering. You do not want to make a move that might jeopardize your ability to be admitted, yet, on the other hand, you will want to repeat, if it seems prudent. Investigate the prospective programs first.

^^ what caliotter said too! One ADN and 1 BSN school in my area knocks points off your application for repeating classes; while another BSN program wants the highest GPA and doesn't mind if you have to repeat to get the better grade.
