Nursing Pin for $115

Our nursing pin costs $115. This seems overpriced to me.

Typically, 70% of the student class opts out of purchasing it because of the cost. If you opt out of getting it, for the pinning ceremony, you get pinned with a fake cheap pin.

I'm on the fence as to whether to get it or not because while the $115 is a lot of money, the cheap pin seems kind of tacky to me.

What are your thoughts?

Is a nursing pin worth $115?

To me, nursing pins are like class rings . . bleh. At least rings you could wear, when am I ever going to use the pin again??

In my opinion, something like a nursing pin from graduation is a big deal. It is something that I would spend however much money as necessary on. That pin holds all of your memories from school, and it is a constant reminder of the fact that you did something many people don't get the chance to- you are a nurse. You worked hard, and you have made so many accomplishments. And you should remember that always. And I think your pin does a wonderful job of that.

In my opinion, it is absolutely not worth $115. I probably wouldn't pay more than $15 for a nursing pin regardless of what it's made of. Remember "class rings" from high school? People payed big money for a ring, wore it until graduation, then it went into a drawer never to be thought of again. These expensive school/graduation souvenirs are all the same, nobody ever wears it afterwards or remembers not buying one, and certainly nobody ever regrets not getting one.

Our class was also shocked at how much the school nursing pins cost- ours had different options with the cheapest being about $50 bucks. At this point of the program, most of us are broke and can't afford that! And we're probably not gonna wear it anyway.

SO one student found a site online where you can design your own pins for only like $2.88 per pin! You have to buy a minimum of 100, but our class has 46 students so that still comes out to only $7/pin. I had students in our class submit designs then we all voted on the design and the color we wanted. The pin company has artists that will render your submitted design to look professional, and let you revise it as many times as needed for free. Shipping is also free and acrylic boxes to keep the pins in are only 25 cents each. The whole process only takes like 2 weeks. It's much better than just getting a generic RN pin because it is personal to just our class and has our school name on it! :) Here's the website we used: Custom Lapel Pins

Wow we had a bunch of different choices and the cheapest was $35 and we were complaining about that lol. I lost my HS class ring. I'm sure I'll lose my pin as well, to be honest. They only gave us a 2 week notice to order them as well. People were complaining because by this point of the game, everyone's broke and 2 weeks isn't enough time to plan.

Someone in my class bought a cheap RN pin and is planning on using that. Wish I'd thought of that. But then again I'm not a big fan of collecting stuff. I don't need a pin to remember nursing school lol.

That is such an awesome (and affordable) idea. Thanks for sharing! It's too late for my class to take advantage of that service but I'll pass on the information to the next class. I agree, it's a lot better than a generic RN pin!

That's the same thing some of us did. The last thing I wanted was a reminder of NS. My degree is enough of a reminder.

Actually, at the hospital that I work at there are many nurses who wear their nursing pins daily as part of their uniform. I still wear my college class ring (but don't know where my HS class ring is! LOL) The reason for the pin isn't to remind you of NS but to announce to others where you went to NS, just like a class ring.

The choice is yours and of course, after the ceremony it can always stay in the jewelery box! LOL

That's interesting to hear some nurses are sporting the pins. I thought it was just my mom and the lady in the nursing lab...

I doubt I'll wear my pin while working because I'd probably forget to take it off before throwing my scrubs in the washing machine. I also don't have that much school spirit for my current school.

Despite this, I'm still glad I purchased the pin. Weird, huh? I think so!
