I'm in my last semester of RN school. I was just wondering if you guys could tell me what the starting pay is at the Hospitals you work for. I may move to a different state to work and I want to know who pays the most. Thanks

I'm practicing in Texas, and I make $22/hr as a Nurse Health Educator. My counterparts in my specialty (OB) make $18-$32/hr in the local hospitals.....

Don't knock TX off your list too quickly...

Wage scales in wisconsin are "front" loaded, which means that new grads start in the $15/hour range, but it takes years to get beyond that. Stay out of the small community hospitals, they always pay less...

Pay is not the only issue. How much does it cost to live in that community, travel back to see relatives, etc. Sometimes greater pay means they have trouble keeping staff. What is the turnover rate? Average number of years nurses stay there??? I moved to Texas from Tenn and get only $1/hr more here but it is MORE.

I have been a nurse for 18 years....The best thing i have found in to find a base hospital to work for...work miminum hours to keep insurane and benifits and then find staffing agencies and make the big bucks.....right now i am woking for an agency that pays OB murses $38.00/hr.....so if i want something extra I work a couple shifts for the agency and buy it.....It help me pay college tution for 2 boys.....and I don't have to be wore out....binky

NY is the highest paying. Right now I make 32/hr. for 12 hour shifts, 3 days a week. New grads are started at 26/hr.

This is what we all should be making or close to it anyway.

Depends on where you live, your experience, area, etc. I'm in corrections (state) and make approx. 5600-5800 monthly. This is for 8 hr. shifts and I'm off Sat/Sun. You couldn't pay me double to work in a hospital again.

Northern California in general pays very well with a corresponding cost of living.Southern California is good too.

I suggest making the quality of your work life a priority also. Ask about length of orientation, whether there is an education department, what the staffing is like, support services and so on.Find out if they will train you in a specialty (OR is really heading for a shortage). Maybe call the hospital on a weekend. Ask to speak with a nurse on the unit you're interested in.Find out the advantages and disadvantages. With this "shortage" you can shop for the first RN job of your choice.

I work in one of those small community hospitals in South Central WI, and I started as a new grad in January at $15.00/hr already recieved one raise and will be getting another soon, By the end of 2001 I will be getting over $17.00/hr. I don't think that is bad. Also no mand OT, payed holidays whether I work them or not, time 1/2 for anything over 8 hrs a day, 2 hrs call in pay.

But I have to agree that we are an exception.

Oh and staffing is excellent compared to many places.
