University of Oklahoma-Accelerated BSN Program

Nursing Students Online Learning

Published

Hi All,

I'm new to this site and to the field of nursing. Has anyone gone to this school and if so, what did you think?

I live in San Diego, CA, and there is an online program that this school offers. I'm 3 prerequisites away from applying to the school, with a start date of August 08. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That is not how the program was advertised, but because it is easier for the staff and so many of the teacher's and the staff have quit (at least at the glendale site) I think they are trying to extend the program to 16 months to cover themselves in the case of disgruntled students. It basically just allows the administration time in Norman, OK to process the official transcripts at their own convenience. It also allows instructors to not have to rearrange the schedules in the final semester to try and fit every requirement into 10 weeks. This may not be a bad idea, but it takes some of the luster off of the "14 month" appeal of the program.

What are everyone's thoughts on the textbooks and e-book package? I have read previous posts where some people rave about using the e-books for quizes and quick searching and others that have said they never used them. Any current students or recent graduates have any input on this? I would really appreciate hearing it before I shell out $$$.

Thanks!

Stick to the E book packages. You can search for info much easier with e-books. You can also copy and paste info to develop study guides. Some of the info from the tests are from the text and are not covered in the power point lectures. But if you get the e-book packages you will be fine.

The e-books were a lifesaver. I highly recommend them. Some people didn't like them, but I did. It made it really convenient to go study somewhere without having to lug all the text books around and searching came in really handy during quizzes and during study groups when there was a question about something.

Thank you all for your posts regarding this program. It's been refreshing to know that any questions I have can easily and quickly be answered by those who have been through it.

Many of us will be starting this program in January and are greatly looking forward to our new adventure. Is there any advice or tips that you can give us to make our lives easier? Should we be doing something a certain way? What should be expect or be looking out for? What worked best for you?

From what I hear, the next 14-16 months of our lives are going to be hectic, unorganized, and stressful. Any information you can provide to lessed the blow will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I also just graduated from the San Diego Program. Everything that has been said here is true. The program is unorganized, chaotic, and stressful to say the least. I never felt like any of the professors, administrators, or clinical instructors truly cared about me, as I was just a number to them. I had a few clinical instructors that didn't even know my name by the end of the semester.

The program being "14 months" is annoying. We finished in October, however, we are still waiting for our transcripts to post, and be sent to the BRN before we can set a date to sit for the NCLEX. I know a few in my cohort have been offered new grad positions with Sharp hospitals, but only a small number compared to everyone in our cohort. Most didn't even get interviews. Other hospitals won't even respond to your application until you are licensed. And, there definitley is NOT a nursing shortage in San Diego anymore.

For those starting in January - good luck. It can be done. You will get through it. Don't stress about it too much and be sure to take some time this holiday season to relax, and enjoy time with your friends and family, because once you start - you will be diving in head first.

wow so many negative comments....

I am finishing 1st semester in SD and I love it ...good luck everyone :)

I have a question about some of the immunization requirements that they haven't told us about yet. We need to have two TB skin tests right? I had one done in early October before I began volunteering with an elderly hospice patient so I just wanted to double check.

yes you need two TB tests

Thanks Reeki, Deemalt and Bash for all your feedback... So candid and eye opening. I will have to ask about all of these items this wednesday during their new SDSU Info forum for the accelerated program... I hope it is still admitting a few times a year, and they dont change too many of their prereqs.

Just curious but how were your grades prior to entering into OU... I am seeing that some schools take a cumulative GPA (this includes your gpa during the first bachelors) that would be bad news for me. I hope they maintain the last 60 units criteria since I am doing much better in the prereqs... I will post once i come home from their info session...nerve racking... hope my plans of attending this absn program are not foiled. Looking at alternatives anyhow... may have to travel down to sd for the national university program....

Bash, reeki, demalt... have you been able to find work after your graduation? That is probably the most worrisome since we have to pay back our loans within 6 months.

I was hired for Sharp's new grad program at Mary Birch 4 months after graduation and start work in a week. Three of the five new grads hired on my floor were from OU but I know that most of the people in my cohort didn't even get interviews for the program. I don't think this had to do with OU really, just the fact that there are way more new grad RNs than there are positions open. I was also offered a position on a med/surg floor up in san luis obispo that I declined since I chose the Sharp program, and the manager of that floor said she was impressed with where OU placed me for rotations. I applied to literally hundreds of jobs before getting offered these positions so it does take a lot of effort to get a job.

Thank you everyone for sharing your experience, both good and bad, about the program. It really is helpful to get the feedback.

I'm anxious to hear what you learn on Wednesday. My info session is not until the end of the month. If you wouldn't mind, would you ask about taking CLEP tests for some of the prerequisites? I'm trying to figure out what I need to register for in the Spring. I'm hoping to CLEP test out of Psychology and/or Sociology, since those look to be new prerequisites for the program? If you get a chance to ask only.

Thanks!
