Nursing with medical conditions

Published

Hello,

I am currently beginning my nursing prerequisites and am positive that I can mentally handle anything nursing school can throw at me. I am very well-versed in coping with stress, mutitasking, all of the above. My only concern is I have very painful bone spurs and cannot stand up for extended periods of time, 3-4 hours straight with breaks in between maybe but I cannot go 12 straight hours standing. It is excruciating when I try, my feet and legs swell...it is a bad time. Would I be able to meet the physical demands of this job? Also, what kinds of desk jobs are there for nurses, I would be more inclined towards that as opposed bedside.

There are those billing people that workin hospitals

I can relate. I have the same concerns. I have an autoimmune disease that goes through periods of flares (very painful) and remissions (ah sweet relief). I'll be watching for any advice here.

Most desk jobs require at least one year of bedside experience. Note I said most. I'm sure there is the odd person out there who managed to land one without experience but that is not the norm. They also tend to be lower-paid. I am very concerned that you will not be able to perform clinically and, while I'm not telling you to change your career goals, I would suggest some serious thought about proceeding on your current path. Nursing school is not inexpensive and it would be tragic if you cannot find a job that can accommodate your needs or worse fail to perform and lose your job after incurring school debt.
