Nursing MDC 2018

Nursing Students School Programs

Updated:   Published

First semester cost for those other future students that are wondering what the cost is.... it's about $1500.

They require you to buy a bag with several kits you'll need for nursing. Its about $128.

Also, this is the same as other schools I've visited, however, for those of you that are curious.... failing 2 classes will get you out of the program. Also, if you fail one class you have to skip the next semester and ONLY take that 1 class and PASS in order to continue the program.

On registration day, they open at 8am. People were waiting there since 7am in line to ensure they got the classes they wanted (sequence 1 or 2). Make sure you get there early. Some people actually were able to register online, and some were not. I've seen some inquiries about what sequence 1 and 2 are. They give the left side of the room in orientation with one color paper (sequence 1) and the other side with another color paper (sequence 2). The sequences are different teachers and different times. Sequence 1 you get Thursday off (for now) and Sequence 2 I wasn't able to see. Its so that you have some choices of teachers and some options with times but regardless of which one you choose the schedule never overlaps.

The cost of the books is about $250.

Take Micro Lab AND Psychology before the start of the program. They have a Baptist Scholarship that requires these classes.

I made the mistake of not taking the classes since I didn't know about this program. Don't make the same mistake.

When you graduate, if you pass NCLEX within 6 months MDC (for now) will reimburse you $200! That's awesome encouragement

Oh! And try to keep your books because before you graduate (make sure to apply for graduation before your last semester starts or you won't be able to graduate regardless of passing your classes) you are required to take the HESI. It's basically confirming that you learned something before they release you. You need to pass it to graduate. If you give up your book you can't review

Also, starting Jan 2018 they will be breaking ground at the parking across the street to build a large parking garage for us! YEY! The bad this is that we don't know when it will be finished. I've decided to take the Metro Rail instead. There are three exits. Santa Clara you need to walk like 2 blocks. The Civic Center you'll need to walk through Jackson Memorial Hospital. CULMER exit is the way to go. Apparently, MDC has a trolley that takes you to MDC !!! The monthly student pass that is available at the bookstore is about $60. Parking if you will be parking at the station near your house is about $12.

They use pink scantrons. Sold at the bookstore for about $1.50 for. Make sure NOT to write your name on all of them. The professors asked that we not write our names on them.

Get your I.D at the medical campus. They give you a bonus thick hard plastic name tag that other campuses do not give. I learned this the hard way :(. But if you are a prior student, but your cover for about $2 at the bookstore. It's worth getting. It's very durable.

You don't need white shoes for school. Just use regular sneakers. You need white shoes for CLINICALS! You can wear a sweater in class but not in CLINICALS so use one of those Under Armor (white plain) shirts under your white clinical shirt.

Don't wait for the Fundamentals professor or any professor for that matter, to email you the syllabus until 2-3 days prior to the first day of school. Remember, they are on vacation too and everyone deserves a break! For Fundamentals, read chapters 1-7. For Pharmacology the syllabus said to read the first 3 chapters.

Don't forget to show a paid receipt of your schedule to get your Parking Decal. Take your ID and car registration too! Also, if you are on a payment plan, they will make you log in to your phone and show that you have a HOLD on your account for pmt Nelnet plan in order to get your tag.

Uniforms at Blue Angels are affordable. I bought mine at the bookstore, however, because the ones at Blue Angels (across from MDC) had a different shade of green on their bottoms than their top. I wasn't too fond of the look but it appears that there were quite a few students that purchased their uniforms there since you see them walking the halls with mismatched scrubs

I hope this helps everyone that is nervous and searching for answers. I wanted to pass the information along Good Luck everyone.

Found nursing dressy shoes for $10 in white at Kikos Outlet in Mall of America!!!!! For just 1 day it’s a perfect price. Not a very pretty mall but for shoes for $10 it is worth it! Especially when I’m never going to wear them again!!!!!

The pins they sell for pinning in the bookstore are $8, $25 and $75!!!!! You need to buy one for pinning but they NEVER get enough of the $8 pins so they sell out. Try buying it ASAP for $8!!!!! Also....the hat they sell is way too big and it’s $25 when you can get one for $6 on Amazon. The school sells the green ribbon for the hat for $5 on the 3rd floor in the Nursing department. You’ll have to glue it at home though. They don’t do it for you.

Hi guys!

For those who were accepted for the Fall 2018 program: when was your mandatory orientation day? The advisor told me its usually in July, but I wanted to know more or less if it lands in beginning/mid/end July. Thank you!!

PsychedVikki,

Yes, our orientation was on July 10th or 12th, maybe both as you have a group in Medical Campus and another in Homestead. We received the confirmation pretty early last year, around June 9th if I remember correctly. Orientation is not what you need to worry the most; It is about the requirements to start, all the vaccines, background checks, CPR courses. If you could start having those done is better, ( in case you have plans of going on vacations after orientation...still you will have time.)

Thank you!!

Congrats to all of you! And thank you for all of the info., MOONNightNURSE!

Salma Yemmas & PsychedVikki! You are very welcome. I actually wasn't sure if many people were following and saw I was posting for no reason but I had hoped it would help someone ? I am definitely a planner and love organizing and going in blind sighted into a serious program like this can be scary so I hope all my posts will lessen your anxiety. Good luck!

Is anyone commuting from out of Dade county? I'll be commuting from Broward.

Wow this information is GOLD! and I can’t express how thankful I am that you have provided it to us. CONGRATS ON PASSING !! all the hard work definitely pays off and you deserve it. I applied for the fall!! I saw you said they go over fundamentals in the first semester. Is there anything else you recommend we could get a head start on studying ??

Fundamentals is not difficult. Its the amount of material and its transitioning between how you used to study and this NEW way of studying. Also, how you are going to organize yourself and the AMOUNT OF MATERIAL you have to read. I did very well in nursing because I read BUT it really is a lot of stuff so I only read the subjects (like in Med Surg) that were listed on syllabus. Know Nightingale and the other theories. Also, know Maslow Hierarchy of Needs. It has to be applied to almost EVERY question! You'll get the hang of it. DONT DEPEND ONLY ON POWERPOINTS. Every person who did this failed their first semester.

Guys! So here is the deal with Exit Hesi. There were two sessions. One in the morning and one in the afternoon. For those that didn't pass, they took the second Hesi today. From what I have heard, it was actually more difficult!!!! BUT, that being said, they all had two additional weeks to study AND the number of their remediation has actually gone down. PLUS, the second attempt only requires you to get 850 (if you did all your assigned tests and got at least an 85%). So for the first attempt we needed a 900, and since we had to wait 3 DAYS for the score we all had to contemplate about our scores based on our remediation packets. When we got out scores the majic number seemed to be 61 packets. Some people with 61 packets got a score of 906 while others didn't make it. Why different? Well, different questions hold different weight. So if you have less than 61 packets available after the first attempt HESI, you should be ok.

One more thing about the HESI, those that left the Second Attempt HESI were surprised to see that this HESI was more challenging than the first. SO.....ignore the rumors that the second attempt is easier. It has 15 Select All That Apply questions, less math questions and the questions were more challenging from what I heard. Now......those that told me this also PASSED that second attempt and their remediation packets were much less which is awesome!!! But they did say it was more difficult.

Graduation Regalia.....make sure you pic up your graduation gown and cap beforehand at the bookstore so you can decorate your cap :). You have your pinning ceremony AND graduation on a different day. Also, if you belong to a club, make sure to purchase your regalia beforehand from the club because sometimes they have to get it mailed.

I was wondering how to wear the regalia and they gave me another tassel so I didn't know if it would replace the MDC tassel or if I wore the tassel with the MDC tassel. I found a pic to help ?

Your Leadership grades apparently WON'T be up by graduation so you won't have the opportunity to walk with any additional tassels or cords if you are counting on the Leadership grade (which is the most important grade because it depends on passing HESI AND other documents.

Oh!! and the graduation invitations (not for pinning, for pinning you don't have a limit of people that can come) are inside the bag with your graduation cap and gown. I think I got 5 in total (you don't count yourself)
