Nursing MDC 2018

Nursing Students School Programs

Updated:   Published

First semester cost for those other future students that are wondering what the cost is.... it's about $1500.

They require you to buy a bag with several kits you'll need for nursing. Its about $128.

Also, this is the same as other schools I've visited, however, for those of you that are curious.... failing 2 classes will get you out of the program. Also, if you fail one class you have to skip the next semester and ONLY take that 1 class and PASS in order to continue the program.

On registration day, they open at 8am. People were waiting there since 7am in line to ensure they got the classes they wanted (sequence 1 or 2). Make sure you get there early. Some people actually were able to register online, and some were not. I've seen some inquiries about what sequence 1 and 2 are. They give the left side of the room in orientation with one color paper (sequence 1) and the other side with another color paper (sequence 2). The sequences are different teachers and different times. Sequence 1 you get Thursday off (for now) and Sequence 2 I wasn't able to see. Its so that you have some choices of teachers and some options with times but regardless of which one you choose the schedule never overlaps.

The cost of the books is about $250.

Take Micro Lab AND Psychology before the start of the program. They have a Baptist Scholarship that requires these classes.

I made the mistake of not taking the classes since I didn't know about this program. Don't make the same mistake.

When you graduate, if you pass NCLEX within 6 months MDC (for now) will reimburse you $200! That's awesome encouragement

Oh! And try to keep your books because before you graduate (make sure to apply for graduation before your last semester starts or you won't be able to graduate regardless of passing your classes) you are required to take the HESI. It's basically confirming that you learned something before they release you. You need to pass it to graduate. If you give up your book you can't review

Also, starting Jan 2018 they will be breaking ground at the parking across the street to build a large parking garage for us! YEY! The bad this is that we don't know when it will be finished. I've decided to take the Metro Rail instead. There are three exits. Santa Clara you need to walk like 2 blocks. The Civic Center you'll need to walk through Jackson Memorial Hospital. CULMER exit is the way to go. Apparently, MDC has a trolley that takes you to MDC !!! The monthly student pass that is available at the bookstore is about $60. Parking if you will be parking at the station near your house is about $12.

They use pink scantrons. Sold at the bookstore for about $1.50 for. Make sure NOT to write your name on all of them. The professors asked that we not write our names on them.

Get your I.D at the medical campus. They give you a bonus thick hard plastic name tag that other campuses do not give. I learned this the hard way :(. But if you are a prior student, but your cover for about $2 at the bookstore. It's worth getting. It's very durable.

You don't need white shoes for school. Just use regular sneakers. You need white shoes for CLINICALS! You can wear a sweater in class but not in CLINICALS so use one of those Under Armor (white plain) shirts under your white clinical shirt.

Don't wait for the Fundamentals professor or any professor for that matter, to email you the syllabus until 2-3 days prior to the first day of school. Remember, they are on vacation too and everyone deserves a break! For Fundamentals, read chapters 1-7. For Pharmacology the syllabus said to read the first 3 chapters.

Don't forget to show a paid receipt of your schedule to get your Parking Decal. Take your ID and car registration too! Also, if you are on a payment plan, they will make you log in to your phone and show that you have a HOLD on your account for pmt Nelnet plan in order to get your tag.

Uniforms at Blue Angels are affordable. I bought mine at the bookstore, however, because the ones at Blue Angels (across from MDC) had a different shade of green on their bottoms than their top. I wasn't too fond of the look but it appears that there were quite a few students that purchased their uniforms there since you see them walking the halls with mismatched scrubs

I hope this helps everyone that is nervous and searching for answers. I wanted to pass the information along Good Luck everyone.

I wouldn’t recommend reading ahead on psych. The professors all have a different way of teaching it. You’ll have fun and enjoy the psych class

I made this picture to remind me of the 4 defects in Tetralogy of Fallot.

Way to go...congratulations! So happy for you. ?

Very important....

Putting PPE on think about the song, head shoulders knees and toes but backways "kind of"

Do the dance so youll remember. --> Chest, Mouth Nose and Hands "nose and hands" (you are going up your body and your hands end up being last since you wave them up in the air.

How to put them on is a little trickier but you have to understand why.....here you go. So first is the dirtiest of all....the gloves of course. Then comes the goggles, if you have them on (think about it....if the goggles got splattered and you took off your mask first it would land on your face!!!! EWWWW)

Then comes the gown. Why not the mask? Well.....think about your mouth and nose being the most vulnerable! Its 3 holes on your face where you breathe in and out from. Yoiu want to keep them protected till the very end so the mask will be the very last thing you take off

CONGRATS! Please update us on your interview process and first day in your career ?

Addisons---- Add in So "dium"............Addi "ZONE" - give cortisone

A friend of mine getting ready to take the NCLEX was saying yesterday that she forgot those medications that need to be taken without or with food. Think about the reason you are taking the medications and ask yourself if you want to have the medication start working faster or not.....and if you want it be washed away.....or if it damages your stomach. I was sitting with my son eating breakfast when I immediately gave him his medication since it has to be taken with food because it is an extended release medication and it starts to work faster if not taken with food. Since this medication has to last the whole time he is in school it makes sense you would give it with food.

So I found another good explanation on other medications......for medications that CAUSE nausea, you want to reduce nausea so you want to take them with a meal. For meds that cause stomach irritation, take with a meal because taking it alone would hurt the stomach more. To treat heartburn or indegiestion you take before or after a meal depending on its purpose. For the medications that are mouthwashes, or a gel or for oral thrush you want to eat first because you dont want to have that medication in your mouth and then later be hungry and eat and wash the medicine away. So you apply the medication after you eat because of that. If there is a medication that has to be absorbed by the blood like HIV or Hepititis or diabetes (remember that all these meds have to do with the blood) you have to take them with meals. Think about the electrolytes and how the body receives its vitamins and minerals.....through the blood. If its for pancreatic, what happens when you eat? The sphincter of odi opens up to release the enzymes from the pancreas so if you want medication to be delivered to the pancreas you have to eat to allow that sphincter to open and deliver the medication. For Levothyroxine.....the reason this one needs to be taken WITHOUT food even though it is slow release is only because of the fact that it has a lot of reactions with food so thats why they just say to tale it without food just in case they eat food that decreases the absorption

Or Myasthenia Gravis which causes muscle weakness. Think about someone with MG and the muscles they need to eat.So for MG medication it has to be taken 30 minutes before a meal so it can start working so the person can actually eat.

A friend mine schedules her test in September. She decided to change her date and DIDN'T REALIZE THAT SHE DIDNT CONFIRM her appointment. Her date came and went and the day she thought was her test, she went online and realized she had missed her test.

Please keep in mind that you WILL receive an email with your new date when you reschedule. If you dont get an email....you didn't reschedule!!

SO what did she have to do now that she missed her test? Well, she had to pay $200 and register for a new test on Pearson Vue. Florida Dept of Nursing also told her to email [email protected] with the subject-- "Requesting Authorization to Test" and she wrote in the email her date of birth, social, and Full Name. She told them she needed a new ATT number since she missed her appointment and needed to schedule the new appointment.

She included her telephone number. She sent this on Thursday and received her email back on MONDAY!! With her ATT!!

Hope this never happens to anyone but it

HI MOONNightNURSE!

Congrats on your NCLEX passing! WAY TO GO!! Tell us about the jobs seeking and what you situation has been?!?! has it been hard to find work? This is something that keeps stressing me as some people are lucky but others spend months without any job offer. How has it been for you so far?

Ok. So I haven't forgotten about your question. Ive just been thinking of how to answer. I graduated in May, took my test in August and just got offered a job in November. Some people were SUPER proactive and started applying even before they took their nursing test! I would totally recommend that! My friends even went to other states and got jobs without their license. SO proud of them! That is not easy to do! So I would recommend to REALLY REALLY REALLY have a good resume! I did a resume for 7 of my friends. I will tell you it took about 3 hours to complete and they were good resumes AND yet it never stops getting updated with additional skills etc. I can't tell you how many times Ive changed mine BUT I've gotten many compliments on it. I got as job this month but I will tell you I interviewed 3 times previously. Two of them went well, one didn't. My first interview the person was a bit aggressive. Interrupted everything I said and asked me for a better answer. LOL. That was my first interview!!!! It really affected my other interviews LOL.

Here are the questions they asked:

- Tell me about yourself

- Why Nursing

-Tell me about a time that you had to deal with a difficult person

- What do you feel about the word NO

- Tell me about a time that you had to think on your feet and what happened afterwards?

- Why should we pick you?

- Do you know a little about the department?

- How do you handle stress?

-Why should we hire you?

-Tell me a time you stepped into a leadership role.

THESE ARE JUST SOME IN REMEMBER......What I did is I recorded my responses to a WHOLE bunch of questions and I listened to myself so I can have just a little idea of what I would say. You don't want to sound like a recording. You want too sound natural and like yourself but its nice to have a line or two to have to help you.

Resume tips:

After your name (if you've gotten your license) put , RN. For example Jane Doe, RN

Put your license number, the BLS or ACLS you've received.

Make sure to have a linked in and reference it and make a hyperlink on your resume

DO NOOOOOOTTTT make your resume longer than one page. If you weren't a nurse before then it doesn't matter what you did before. For work/clinical experience you should only have your clinicals (make sure to list hospitals you worked at and the class) and the last job you were in.

Make your clinical experience the highlight of everything!!!! Make those bullets super memorable. Make sure you put everything you did and experienced.

The last job you were in should have things that you can KIND OF use towards nursing. Like......if its something about customer service.....use it to your advantage

No color in bullets people!

Time New Roman is preferred

Use resume paper

Have your reference letters from your professors

12 point font

14-16 font for Heading

Add how many words per minute you type

Add hard and soft skills (add some cells so you can use a lot of the space and remove the lines afterwards)

Don't be so specific with your objective. Don't specify a unit you want to work for since you really need to be open.

Have a thank you letter ready so send! AND DONT FORGET TO GET THE BUSINESS CARD!!! To send the email.

If I think about anything else Ill let you know.
