New ASN grad moving out of state

Im a new ASN graduate after working as a paramedic for 5yrs. My wife received her dream job offer in another state and has since moved there to begin working. I was waiting to move out with her until after i finished school and sold the house. I just passed my NCLEX-RN and now I'm in the process of selling my house.

Question is should I wait until I sell the house and move to the new state before applying or should i not wait and apply for a job in my current state and try to get some work experience before the move?

Some obvious issues is i dont know how long it will take to sell my house and then complete the move (job gap). However, i also dont want to get a new job in my current state and have to quit it after 3 months because I sold my house quickly and have to move.

Is there something i can do in the interim?

Any suggestions ?

So what state did you license yourself in? Where you currently live or where you will be moving to soon?

If its in the state where you currently live then yeah get on the job hunt process asap along with getting your license in the state you're about to move to. I hear it takes forever with some states.

Are you in state with compact licenses? (I'm not, so not as familiar as other posters would be) If the state you're moving to is not a compact state with the one you currently live in then I would get licensed asap there so you can start the job hunt as soon as your house is sold.

It has been my experience that most HR departments will toss/weed out applications for a variety of reasons like not holding a current license in their state.

Hopefully that all makes sense...no coffee yet!

I am licensed in Connecticut and moving to Indiana. I already started the process of getting my Indiana license. One of my concerns is that I apply in Connecticut and get hired and then sell my house and move after only working a few months. Not only will it be cruel to the employer who has to train and invest in someone who leaves so soon thereafter, but it will look bad to my future potential employers ?

It is cruel but times are changing...or you may want to spend your energy towards an RN to BSN/MSN program. I work for a really good employer but if I had to pay bills and support a family I would take a job even if only for a few months, depends on your situation. If they had been burned too many times a contract would be in place prior to hire anyways.

Times are changing with degree inflation as well unfortunately. Do you know the job market you're about to move into? Are the employers narrowing down their requirements for hire or do you still have cushion to get hired with your degree?

When I graduated six plus years ago with my ASN I could already see the writing on the wall because my employer was on the journey to reach Magnet status. You can still get hired at my work with an ASN/ADN/Diploma but now new hires sign a contract to get their BSN within five years of hire. Either way, good luck!
