Nursing/Healthcare in UK

Hello everyone,

I have some questions I hope someone can help me with. My husband, daughter, and I are planning a move to England soon (he's English). I am excited and nervous. I have been a nurse for a little over 2 years, and work in mental health. I know to continue working in mental health I will have to take 18 months at college in mental health nursing. What I'm wondering is if the current job shortage/rn job cuts apply to mental health nursing? I'm wondering if after qualifying as a RMN, will I find a job in the field? We are planning on moving to Somerset, anyone know about RMN in this area?

Also, I have read somewhere that the NHS is not very good as far as healthcare coverage, and that it is beneficial to have private insurance as well. Is this true?

Any information would be very much appreciated! Thanks!

going though NMC will be fun if you haven't already done so and will need to do a course before you get a PIN which will enable you to work... Not sure about the 18 month course at college as they are usually seconded from place of work.

Can't comment about jobs in Somerset but know in the nursing times (http://www.nursingtime.net) there isn't many jobs advertised including mental health.

Healthcare is the same regardless where you work and there are waiting lists if referred to consultant care at a hospital. Some do have private healthcare and that is up to each individual. One thing to be aware that now you have to be back in the UK for 6 months before qualifying for the NHS and this includes returning UK citizens who have lived out of the country. You should still be ok to register with a gp as long as you have a stamp in passport giving you permission to enter the country or EU citizen

Good luck on your move

God help you if you are sick in the first 6 months then, lol. I know if I returned to the UK I would be very cross if I couldnt access health care for 6 months especially when i had been paying into the system for almost 30 years.

Can't comment on the mental Health thing, although their section has not shrunk quite as much as the general nursing section has in the recruitment pages on the Nursing Times. However, I do know they are very much the "Cinderella" service of the NHS so have been working on a shoe string for years!

As per private health insurance as far as I'm concerned it's the best money I spend every month! All my family have now benefitted from it in one way or another over the last few years. The waiting is not actually 6 months for many things on the NHS but going private means you get consultant care only & you can choose when you want to have your op or your appointments (within reason).

I think it's selective budgeting. In my experience, amounts of cash have been for years and are now even more flowing into areas of Mental Health such as drug and alcohol services - anywhere where there is a huge visible burden on the NHS and public at large and where something needs to be seen to be done. However, it appears that MH services in England are being cut to cover the cost of acute services

The good old NHS.

Aint that always the way! Won't be long before the next psycho kills someone & is found to have "begged" the NHS for help but due to cuts couldn't find a bed etc etc etc!

That is so true. We had a patient brought in by ambulance last year and it turned out that I knew him years ago. I was told he was a drug user, a drunk and violent. He was, when I knew him a very nice clean living bloke who only liked a drink.

When he came round (on the floor) I asked him what was going on? After lots of questioning he finally told me that his wife had left him over a year ago and for 6 months he had been trying various ways to kill himself. He said he was violent to the staff once because he wanted to be sectioned and they refused.

On this occasion he was found lying in the middle of a busy road on a blind bend after taking lots of alcohol and sleeping tablets.

I told the staff that he was not like this and he that he needed help. So, they discharged him as soon as he was up on his feet. How can anyone possibly think things like this will save money?
