Please, I need some advice!
Thanks everyone for replying. My husband is English, and wants us to move back to England. So my situation is a little different than others. I have already gone through the whole nmc process, I just have to do the 20 day placement, and I've heard this is extremely difficult to secure.

Please, I need some advice!
I've spent a lot of time reading through the posts here, and from what I can gather getting work as a RN in the UK is extremely difficult. Is this correct? Would I be foolish to leave the US where there are plenty of jobs open, to go to the UK? Thanks in advance for replying. ~5thflrnurse

Psychiatry in UK
Hello everyone, I was wondering what a typical day is like for a RMN on an inpatient unit in England? (i.e. job responsibilities) Also, has mental health nursing been affected by the NHS job cuts I've been reading about? In the US I work as a psychiatric registered nurse, and have a four year college nursing degree, but as I understand it, I cannot work as a mental health nurse without first going back to school for 18 months in the UK. Is this correct? Thanks very much in advance for your help! 5thflrnurse

RN From the Phils to the UK and Finally to US
Hello Carol, After reading your post I felt compelled to reply. I was a little disheartened by the tone of your message. It sounds to me like you have a fixed idea of Americans, and have painted us all with the same brush. I can tell you, after living here and traveling extensively, you find witty, intelligent people everywhere in this world, just like you find obnoxious, uninformed people in all parts of the world. Surely the world's most intelligent and wittiest people can't all be concentrated in the Phillipines and England, can they?! I'm sure you will adjust to life in America just fine. You really should try seeing some of the beautiful places we have here in the States, then you may have a better appreciation of the country you now call your home. As for the money to be made in nursing, I agree that it is quite good in the US. Be thankful for that! If money is your main motivation, and from your post it clearly is, then you're in the right place! I do hope you don't mess up your career somehow though, by covering up your mistakes, as you admitted to doing. Perhaps these are just very small mistakes, hopefully nothing that would put your trusting patients in danger. Good luck! ~5thflrnurse

Nursing/Healthcare in UK
Hello everyone, I have some questions I hope someone can help me with. My husband, daughter, and I are planning a move to England soon (he's English). I am excited and nervous. I have been a nurse for a little over 2 years, and work in mental health. I know to continue working in mental health I will have to take 18 months at college in mental health nursing. What I'm wondering is if the current job shortage/rn job cuts apply to mental health nursing? I'm wondering if after qualifying as a RMN, will I find a job in the field? We are planning on moving to Somerset, anyone know about RMN in this area? Also, I have read somewhere that the NHS is not very good as far as healthcare coverage, and that it is beneficial to have private insurance as well. Is this true? Any information would be very much appreciated! Thanks! ~5thflrnurse

Thanks everyone for the advice and encouragement! I think I will accept the position, and just ask for a longer orientation if I feel I need it. This opportunity is too good to pass up! Good luck on your first day Ohiomom, let us know how it goes!

Help! New position in Bone Marrow Transplant
Hello- I have a question for all of you working in BMT. I have just been offered a RN position on a BMT unit at a university hospital. The position will be 12 hour shifts, days. I was told my orientation will include one week of hospital orientation, PBDS assessment, and then my orientation will be tailored to fit my specific needs. The interviewer told me orientation is generally 4 weeks, but can be extended. This unit hires new grads, so I assume they are open to training people! I hope so- this is my dream job, and the reason I went into nursing (to work in Oncology), but I'm so nervous, I can't sleep at night! I have been a nurse for a little over a year now, but when it comes to this area of nursing, I might as well be a new grad. I have been working on a Medical Psychiatry floor since graduation (heavy on the Psych., very little Medical!), and in the past year have had maybe 2 or 3 patients on IV fluids/meds! So my question is, am I getting in over my head? I would be leaving a job I feel very comfortable in, but am not passionate about. Any help would be very much appreciated!

English, please
Yes, we are clearly in AMERICA, where ignorance and prejudice abound. Have you ever tried thinking about what it feels like to come to another country, not speaking the language well, being away from all familiar people and surroundings? Ever thought about what it's like for immigrants on a daily basis? I'm sure having to deal with the inconvenience of wading through Spanish advertising/information pales in comparison to what they deal with on a daily basis. Have some compassion.

Child psych. nursing
Hello- I'd like some info on nursing in child psych. What are the majority of diagnoses you see? Do you do a lot of behavioral therapy and teaching working in this area? It seems like it would be very rewarding to work in this area, and very sad too. Could any of you working in child psych give me some insight? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks! :)

Radiation oncology nursing question
Hello- I have a question about the availability of rad. onc. nursing positions. I've been looking around, and haven't found many hospitals looking for nurses to work in this area. Those of you working in oncology and radiation onc., are only a small number of nurses usually employed in rad. onc. dept.s? Is experience on an oncology floor usually required to work in rad. onc.? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks!
