Nursing Grad: First Job?!

Published

Hey everyone! My name is Alex. I am graduating from Binghamton University's accelerated nursing program this May (2016).

I am originally from Long Island, but I understand that the job market on LI/NYC is very competitive, especially for new grads. I am hoping to land a job in the Albany area, preferably Albany Medical Center.

Does anyone know when the 'best time' to apply is? I was going to get started now! Also, on the AMC website, there are only 1-2 postings that say "new grads welcome to apply." Are those the only positions I should I apply for? Would a new grad have a shot for the jobs which say "experience preferred?"

Is it assumed that new grads won't start working until after they pass the NCLEX-RN exam? I will probably take it in July, so my start date would be July/August.

Also, if anyone has any advice for a new grand to get her first job, it would be appreciated! Thank you in advance, everyone. I am very excited to join the nursing community!

PS: Happy Valentine's Day!!!

Hey Alex! Fellow nursing student here, graduating May 2016.

Don't be afraid to apply to jobs on LI or in the NYC area if that's really where you'd like to work - it doesn't hurt to try!

Unless the hospital has a special new grad program with a separate application process then yes, those positions that state "new grads welcome to apply" are the ones you should be applying to. In my experience, unless the job posting specifically states that you must have previous experience to apply, I'd say go for it! Even if experience is preferred, they may still consider new graduates for the position, especially if you do have prior hospital experience as a CNA, tech, etc.

As far as the NCLEX goes, you don't want to assume anything. Make sure that it is clear that you state when you are graduating, when you are taking the NCLEX, and when you are available to start working. That will clear up any confusion.

I would really suggest applying to a few different hospitals and units you are interested in, especially if you already have an "in" from doing clinical or working there. Sometimes it helps to call HR and ask about positions that are suitable for new graduates and they will be able to point you in the right direction. Good luck to you!! :)
