Nursing 4600 Excellence Spring Session 2

Nursing Students Ohio University

The syllabus for this class was emailed yesterday. Most non-clinical assignments are DB items. Clinical looks fairly straightforward that culminates in a research paper. These are not clinicals in the classical sense of the word. Each week you are asked to submit a small assignment such as topic of choice (from several choices), outline, plan and final paper.

Looks like they paired down previous assignments for this class to accommodate the 'clinical' component. No quizzes. Only one book required and it is an easy read.

Received full credit for my DB...even though I had some glaring grammar and citation errors I noticed after I posted. So, I am very grateful. Still waiting for grade on week one goals for indirect clinicals.

I did notice for week two...which is a form you fill out to further state your goals on project...that it asked about how the consultation with preceptor is going and any issues or topics you discussed. It does not ask for preceptor to sign off on this assignment.

QSEN.org is where you will find your project idea for competency goals. Hope this helps. It is very generic. You will either address, Safety, Evidenced Based practice, Quality improvement etc. There is a list on the website.

Happy dance...got full credit on clinical week one. Hoping I can keep this momentum going. I have lost all my get up and go.

Glad the TA is being fair.

Specializes in lots of specialties.

Me too....good god let these next few weeks be over soon. Did anyone catch that we have a spring break for Eng but none of the nursing classes?

Just finished week two of Excellence. Glad to have that behind me. Three more to go!!

Any updates on the "clinical" component and what the preceptor does?

I am taking 4600 in March and am thinking about a project. I consulted my Manager and agreed to work on a project with him. My only concern is: does this project have to be done from beginning to end within that 5-week period? To get something approved where I work takes forever and a ton of paperwork (government). I am afraid I won't be able to complete a "project" within that short time period.

It is not a project in that since. It is more a series of papers. You think of a problem that you see in your work place and you come up with goals and solutions to the problem. Not anything that needs to be run by management in order for you to accomplish. It is more research oriented and you "meet" with your mentor to discuss things. I think people are making this much more complicated than it needs to be.

The areas you can decide to write about and research are listed at QSEN.org

I find myself just writing, thinking, researching articles and that is the extent of it. And talking with my mentor/slash coworker/preceptor who has a BSN. Remember this is called an INDIRECT clinical.

People...do not make this harder than it is!

How many papers each week? How long? And are you still doing other assignments?

Thank you. That makes me feel relieved. I am starting to work on a project with my manager so I will keep my idea.

Other assignments consist of DB...one week has an extra DB and assignment in place of project work.

These are fill in the blank template papers (I find those easier to do) for three of the weeks of your "project". One week you just do a DB post about your "project" and the final week is a paper summarizing all your points from the previous weeks. Still need to cite and have references for of these writings every week..

The hardest part of the indirect clinical is thinking of what objective and goal you want to focus on and then finding the information to go with it. The areas of focus you choose from are found on QSEN.org Examples are Evidenced based practice, Quality assurance, safety, etc.

That's a lot of great info EmJean, thanks so much for sharing. It sounds very doable.
