Nursing entrance Exams...Is it just me or?

Published

Is it just me or are these tests complete BS?! I took the TEAS yesterday and I did not do so hot! I studied the TEAS prep book inside and out. I even bought their app for 9.99. I was getting an 88-98 on all the practice exams and had studied for three months! I go in to take the actual exam and I was stunned by the questions, most did not relate to ANY of the study material. I know the majority of the information well enough to find the right answer even if I was not familiar with the question, but these questions were off the wall. Math somewhat resembled the book and the grammar section did as well, but the science was way off! I scored a 78% on the science, but that is still incredibly disappointing to me considering how well I did on the study material they advise you to get. I take the HESI and the PAX-RN in a few days for two other schools, so hopefully those are better. Sorry I needed to rant and see if anyone else feels the way I do.

Hi AMM_5,

I totally understand your disappointment. I took it yesterday and did not do as well as I hoped. Is it total BS...yes and no. This is just one checkoff item we have to do in order to be accepted. I might add this is my 2nd time taking it and though I improved, still not the % that the nursing school I'm interested in has suggested. So i thought about if I should try for a 3rd time or just submit it..I decided to submit it and see what happens. I see so many posts on here about how people did well, and I on the other hand did BLAH.... Such is life. I'd say retake it and see if your scores improved. I know it's hard not to compare with schools being so competitive, but keep trying and someone will be happy to accept you! Good Luck!

I took the HESI for another school I had applied for the other day and I did really well, so I am just going to shoot for that school lol! I also took the PAX-RN for another school and that test was incredibly hard. They give you less than a minute for each question, including reading. Do you have any schools around you that uses the HESI? Thanks for replying to my rant btw lol! I am not as mad as I was, but that day I was really upset over it all.

I thought I was the only one that felt like this. The math + English sections were similar to all the practice exams. But the reading and science were ridiculous. If it wasn't for the fact that I already took anatomy & physio, the science portion would've definitely hurt me much more.

I'm sorry, you feel that way. What kind of science questions are on the exam? I have to take the Teas 6 in two months and I am nervous.

A 78 in the science section is actually an excellent score for the majority of programs in my area.

What was your overall score? 78 is very good.

I was only half way through A&P 1 when I took the TEAS. I didn't study much otherwise, but I had focused on chemistry and basic biology, only to find the majority of the questions were A&P. So many enzymes and hormones I had no idea about. I got 84% on science, 87% adjusted overall, but I want to retake in the Spring when I have most of A&P 2 done. It was tough.

I would not retake it with a score of 87%. That's definitely in the 90th percentile and a lot of students hardly make that score.

I have no idea what is being accepted for the nursing program, and it is making me extremely nervous. They are talking about 500 applicants for 40 spots. I want to study English grammar (I got 75% on that section) and hope for a 90-91% overall.

I thought the reading was really tough! on the HESI I scored a 92 on reading but on the TEAS I failed reading?!?! I scored a 68 on that part and I consider myself a good reader and have never struggled with reading comprehension. Obviously I wasn't doing something right though.

I was thinking the same thing!! That sounds like a great score! I am sure that you will get in! Most schools will take your higher score, so it may not hurt to re-take it, but it sounds like you did great!

My overall was 70%. I scored in the 60s for reading and English and in the 70's for math and science. I am just so happy I applied for other schools that use different entrance exams. I took the HESI and did really well, I received early acceptance to that school.
