nursing in England

World UK

I have been a Registered nurse for >3yrs in the USA, working in ECU/trauma center. I am moving to England, close to Cambridge and Bury, and want to work over there as a RN, I've been Considering obtaining the Highly Skilled Immigrant Work Permit (which allows me to go to an employer w/a work permit already), which is very expensive, but worth it to me if i can get a job easier, but i am unsure if i really need it or not? Do you recommend it? Will i have any problems finding an employer to sponsor me for a work permit if i don't obtain this highly skilled permit? Any recommended employers to check out near Cambridge or Bury that will employ me? Thank you in advance so much for any info you can provide me with!! :uhoh3:

Congratulations and good luck in finding a job. I am sure your story will inspire the US nurses who are hoping to travel to the Uk to work

Thanks to you and to RGN1 for the kind words. I am now in East Sussex for the day and wondering if anyone knows anything about the south coast hospitals? As in, clean and modern? I'm thinking of Conquest Hospital here in Hastings, or any of the others running all along the coast. I've started some online applications, so I appreciate the nice words.

Thanks,

Gail

Hi,

I am also very interested in working the the UK. I recently completed my BScN in June, and have been working in the NICU. I want to gain at least a year of experience before going. I also have my UK passport, as well as my Canadian. Could someone tell me if finding a job is still difficult even with my British passport?

Thanks

Will be easier having a UK passport but you still need to meet all requirements of NMC before they will issue you with a number and you can work in the UK as RN and also there will probably be many wanting jobs so may be hard to get especially if not already living in the UK. I would also image you need to be prepared to live anywhere in the UK looking at current situations

Good luck and hope this helps and is just my opinion but there are many nurses currently out of work including newly qualified nurses with very few jobs advertised

Hi again,

Always the best thing to do is to contact the HR depts of the hospitals near to where you're moving to. They have the real information as to the jobs available. It's just like trying to get a job here; contact your perspective employer and talk to them! They will also be able to advise you if you the best path to follow to be able to work in the UK. It makes no sense to go through a middleman if you're willing to fill out all the paperwork yourself.

If anyone is planning to work in another country, contact the Nursing Board of that country at least 1 year before moving to make sure that you have enough time to get through the licencing procedure. Almost all require that your school sends transcripts, your job sends references and you have all your relevant personal documentation (birth certs etc). The transcripts and job references routine: You send the formal request from the application booklet (from Nursing Board) to the school; the school must send back your official transcripts with the form--you can not send this to the Nursing Board, it must come from the school. The same goes from the employer. Remember to read everything in the licence application booklets, this is what I used to be paid to do--make sure the applications were done correctly...and you wouldn't believe the stuff I saw!! Anyway, the devil is in the detail.

Good luck all you future travelers!

IrishRen

I am an RN in the US working towards my BSN. I have researched about coming to the UK ans it seems pretty hard. Does anyone know anything about nursing in Ireland.Do i require a BSN. the nursing board website was not helpful

hi,am also considering registering in Ireland and practising there as a nurse.what i know is that english exam must be written for those outside of EU and once u meet up with the english then u can apply fr the pack to be sent to u which begins the usual processing. Also ,about the employment opportunities ,there has been a ban in employment for months but it has just been lifted but i do not know the job opportunities now bcos the HSE target is to provide employment within available resources.I hope this little information helps.

You are right Fonenures, about the english requirement in Ireland.I just achieved the score and i have sent my documents and payment to An Bord Altranais today but i am not sure of the employment opportunities for this year since the HSE has set the target to employ within available resources. But however they plan it ,i am positve about getting a very good job by God's grace.I would appreciate if you could send me links to hospitals with modern facilities and standards in Ireland ,and probably any hospital i can apply to once i receive my decision letter:thankya:
