new gerontology teacher overwhelmed

  1. I teach BSN students in geri and am very new at this and very overwhelmed. I was not trained in education but with a MSN they think I can do this. Maybe they are just so desperate they took me. I need good resources for class.

Maybe a good resource would be staff at a nursing home. Try to speak w/ a gerontologist or his PA or NP. I know there is alot of info out there. Not a favorite lecture of mine. Sorry......

:rollI just started teaching LPNs and my best advice for you is to call the company of the book and they will give you resource materials to help write tests, powerpoints and lecture topics!!! Good LUCK!!

Actually there are several resources available. Teaching faculty about gerontological nursing is what I do. If you let me know what topics you are having trouble with I might have some resources that may be of assistance. To start try , and this website A new look at the older adult, complete with several webcasts and content that you might want to use in class, independent study, or for your own refresher.

What do you need help with? Do you have experience in geriatrics?

I worked nursing homes before med/surg over 8 yrs ago. New to teaching. Having problems trying to figure how to work this site. I really enjoy teaching but just learning how and writing lessons is about to send me up the wall.

can you ask to be assigned a mentor among the other instructors? Do they allow you to see the curriculum that was taught previously?

Check out our thread: Video: Getting Started on to learn how to navigate websites.

Vicky has provided many great links regarding teaching....most of this is new info to me so can imagine being overwhelmed as a student or new nurse would be. Hang in there, as you get more computer and internet savy, ideas for teaching and class prep will just flow.

    Good Luck in this position.
