Hi

hope the thread title didnt sound too needy, but had to get you to read it somehow. i'm really interested in becoming a nurse, and the whole idea appeals to me, but there are a few things i was wondering about that the NHS obviously dont have on there site.

firstly i was wondering what it is like to be a nurse and be doing a nursing degree (quite general i know but bare with me).

Secondly i was just wondering how many males there were on the course, in some respects the fewer the better, but i still wondering anyway as i am a male myself.

Thirdly some one who is doing a nursing degree told me that you dont get any summer holiday like most uni students coz you get unpaid summer placements, was just wanting to know any info about this!

Any info would be great!! Cheers. Will (Foz)

First off, it's not a nursing degree, it's a degree in science and a nursing license.

Lots of men are nurses. They are outnumbered by women and will probably always be, but there are many men who are nurses.

Summer depends on the school. Some take breaks over the summer, some don't. Some get you externships that pay you.

THere are so many options that I suggest you go to your local colleges and meet with an advisor. They will be able to tell you the specifics. You can get a 2 yr associates degree or a bachelors degree. You have to take a lot of general courses first. Most have summer breaks unless you do an accelerated program (which you need a prior degree to do). Some people do a summer internship but it is not usually required. There are about 6 males in my class of 50. Many males are starting to go into this field and you see male nurses regularly.

Besides contacting your local nursing educational institutions for information, I would suggest you look for at least one person who is a nurse and ask them some questions. Maybe some of our members from England could correspond with you on this board and via PM and share some of their experiences. Most of us who have not been educated in or worked in England are not very knowledgeable about the unique features of nursing in England. Good luck to you.

Added thought: And welcome to the board. Visit our UK forum. You can find lots of interesting posts/threads there.

Whoops....I didn't notice you're in England. Maybe there it is a nursing degree. I'm sorry.

Nursing is what you make of it, depends on what you want to do in the future. If you are planning on moving abroad at some stage be aware that the UK training does not always meet the requirements of the country you are going to especially if out of the EU.

More and more men are doing nursing and you will probably find a couple in your group.

No you do not get holidays like the university as it is a continuous course but you will have group holidays.

I would check out the university you want to do the course with and see if they are planning on doing a open day. If at Sheffield then the course is at Wath on Dearne and a nice place to study.

PM me if you want to Foz693.
