Nursing Career Over Before it Gets Started?

Nurses LPN/LVN

:bluecry1:Hope I'm at the right forum for advise, but if not, please let me know. My problem is that I am a new LPN that graduated in April 2007. I have worked at the local hospital here for almost the last year. My nsg. mgr. did not like me and was ALWAYS calling me into her office for the silliest little things. The last time I was called into her office, I was given a 3 day suspension for not giving an aspirin to a chest pain patient that was brought to the floor from the ER like 9 HOURS after they arrived! Little late to give an aspirin, right? Anyway, following the write up, I submitted my 2 wk. notice, because I was told that the next med error she found, I would be terminated and I didn't want to walk in one day only to be fired on the spot! Well, my problem now is that I have applied at SEVERAL places for a job and I have not heard ONE THING FROM ANYONE!! I think she is giving me a bad reference and that is the only nursing experience I have to show on my resume. Oh mercy... I have NEVER been so down and depressed in all of my life! After 45 yrs. of life I FINALLY had the opportunity to fulfill my life long dream of being a nurse, and now....I'm just heartbroken and it seems to be over for me. Please, I need someones help. Sorry this is so long, but I don't know what to do from here...

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

Arrange for one of your friends to telephone your current workplace for a reference on you. Your friend needs to pretend that he/she is a hiring manager at a local hospital, nursing home, or clinic in the area, and that he/she is reviewing an employment application you recently submitted. If your nurse manager divulges negative information about you during the phone call, then your suspicions will be confirmed.

Don't give them your manager's name. Direct them to HR. NO FACILITY here will give a bad reference, and some will only verify dates, period.

If you do find that she's bad mouthing you you should report her to the Dep't of Labor.

And good luck.

Yes, I thought of that...thank you. But what if she is? I know that she can say anything as long as it is true and without malice...But how will I ever get another job? I'm soooooo confused and don't know what to do next.

Yes, the HR dept. probably wouldn't...the problem is...this is a small town hospital...where EVERYONE KNOWS EVERYONE...and all she has to do is tell HR that if someone calls for a reference on me...to send them to her....see...this is SUCH A MESS....

That would probably be in violation of HR's own policy. i doubt that they would do it.

Yeah, I believe they would....that's what I'm saying. Very small town hospital. They make their own rules as they go I think...it's all about who you know.:scrm:

I work in a tiny CAH in a rural area. I was fired from this place 2 years ago and was hired back in February.

I sincerely doubt the HR will screw you. Go through HR.
