Nurses Career Support

Published

Hi guys! Just wondering if you know any private nursing schools in the west coast, specially California that offer either ADN or BSN. or if you went to a private school in the west coast, I want to find out how your admission and school experiences were like. Thanks in advance.

In Oregon: Linfield College in Forest Grove--clinicals in Portland at Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital; University of Portland in Portland, clinicals at Providence St Vincent and (I think) Providence and Providence Milwaukie Hospitals; Walla Walla College of College Place, Washington, clinicals at Portland Adventist Hospital. I really don't know of any outside the Portland area. All of these schools offer a baccalaureate degree.

Hi! There is a christian private school--Point Loma Nazarene University that offers those degrees. Web site is ptloma.edu. I am considering going there but the price is about 19,000 per year not including living quarters. This is a lot more than our state university but easier to get in. I just found this site and was reading through the postings and saw yours, hope it helps.

Actually Linfield is in McMinnville, ( http://www.linfield.edu/ ) but yes the clinicals are at Good Sam's in Portland and they also have a Portland Campus. The school in Forest Grove is Pacific University ( http://www.pacificu.edu/) I don't think they have a nursing program- not sure.

Also, coming soon another private college, George Fox "now" University will be opening and using Newberg's NEW Providence hospital (and other sites). George Fox ( http://www.georgefox.edu/academics/index.html) bought out the old hospital campus and will expand to include nursing in the curriculum.

I plan on attending Linfield for my RN to BSN - Linfield currently has an 88% pass rate for boards so, I'm sticking to my Comm College that has a 98% pass rate and then headin to Linfield to finish my BSN - besides...it's within walking distance ;)

"Actually Linfield is in McMinnville"

Oops. So it is.

Specializes in Critical Care, Cardiac Cath Lab.

Pacific University is in Forest Grove (not Linfield, as people have mentioned), but it doesn't have a nursing program. The do have a physician assistant program, though. :)

I attended Point Loma Nazarene University (class of 1997). I miss living on that gorgeous campus and enjoying San Diego. It was a great experience. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is willing to take out student loans or has the means to pay the high tuition. I am still paying on my student loans. I ended up getting about 25,000 in grants and scholarships and I took out about 25,000 in loans. My parents also paid about 16,000. It was not cheap, but it was worth it for me to have my BSN and finish in 4 years. The hospitals that you have your clinicals in are large teaching facilities with opportunities to experience a wide variety of patients and meet advanced practice nurses of all types. My instructors were very approachable and available. It was a challenging program but I can see the difference in my education when working with nurses with degrees from less challenging programs. (I work on a crazy med/surg floor in a large hospital in LA.)

You do have to remember that it is a private CHRISTIAN university and has a lot of rules and moral conduct agreements. All freshman and sophomores have to live on campus too unless they are living with family. Chapel was mandatory when I attended also. I haven't visited in a few years so I don't know what has changed. My advice is to visit any colleges you are interested in first and make sure it is worth the investment for you. Make sure you can live with the conduct rules and the general atmosphere of a Christian student body.

Look at the junior college programs too. There are good ones out there for people who need flexible classes etc. There are many ADN RNs out there with excellent knowledge and skills so I am not saying you have to have the BSN. I had a personal goal of obtaining a Bachelors degree or higher regardless of which career I chose. Good luck in choosing a college and a career! :)

It is. But their School of Nursing is in NW Portland. I went to an information session there on Wednesday night, and they not only have clinicals at Good Samaritan, they have them in all kinds of facilities within 60 miles (some are in Salem). University of Portland has clinicals all over the area, too. I think it will be great to get such different experiences.
