New Grad RN

Nurses Career Support

Published

Hi everyone I would just like some advice.. I'm currently a new grad with a BSN degree. I'm employed at an Outpatient Clinic in the oncology dept. In our dept we don't do the infusion / tx's but rather I work alongside the Oncologist and see pts on a regular basis for f/u's.

I'm still in my early 20s and I was just wondering what I could do after 5 years from now? What are my options? I was looking into case management or even becoming a NP in oncology but I've got advice that they recommend I get Med surg experience before looking into NP school. I really love my job and so leaving it for med surg experience isn't something I'm looking in to.

Any advice? I'm pretty much looking in to what I can do after this job. Any bit helps! Thank you!

What do you want to do 5 years from now? That is the answer to your question.

You do not need to get med surg experience before going to NP school. Don't do that. But do know what you want to do 5 years from now before you enroll in NP school, because that part is important.

If you like oncology, there are Oncology NP jobs. You do not need med/surg RN experience to get into a good NP program. It may be a bit soon to decide where you want to be in 5 years. I advise you revisit this in another year.
