"Through a series of mergers and acquisitions, Mr. Scrushy built HealthSouth into a chain of more than 1,500 hospitals and clinics. He spent liberally on "road shows" featuring professional athletes and a trio of pop music singers.
Shortly after HealthSouth first sold shares to the public in 1986, Mr. Scrushy (pronounced SCROO-shee) instructed officials of the company, known as HRC in stock listings, to "artificially inflate its earnings to match Wall Street earnings and maintain the market price for HRC stock," the S.E.C. said."
