Nurses who work with the police?

Hello,

I'm a nursing student who is really interested in the types of nursing that might relate to police work, specifically in Canada. I'm wondering if anyone out there who has a job that involves working closely with the police could tell me about their job, what it involves, and what sort of training/experience they had prior to getting this job? I'm not really sure what sort of job opportunities there might be in this sort of area. I'd really appreciate it! Thank you!

Thanks so much, AirForceRN! Off topic, but do you have "civilian nurses" who work on the AirForce base where you are? A family member just joined the army, so its got me wondering about nursing jobs in the forces.

I work at a navy base (nursing is considered a "purple" trade which means I'm just as likely to work at an air base as a sea or land one)...but to answer your question, no...we don't have civi nurses working on base. That being said...I'm Canadian, things might be different down south.

CFB Edmonton hires LPNs to work on base. They hire through a civilian contractor. Husband said they do physicals and immunizations (it's frees up medics)

Yeah...we have contracted LPNs on base here too, just not RNs.

Fiona and AirForceRN, thanks so much for your replies! I appreciate it. I'm Canadian, too, so the Canadian info is great.

WHY DO THEY REFER TO lpN'S AS MEDICS? I WORKON AN AF BASE AND THEY CALL ME A MEDIC. I HATE THAT. I WORKED HARD FOR THIS LICENSE. FLORIDA BOARD SAYS MILITARY MEDIC TRAINING IS NOT NURSING EDUCATIO.:nurse:

You're in a Canadian Forum, discussing the Canadian Armed Forces and Police Services.

Canadian Medics are required to obtain their LPN status in order to take the OR Tech and Ortho Tech programmes offered here. A nursing permit is required for those advanced courses. I've had Medics do practicuums in my hospital and it's always a hoot when they have to do LTC placements.

So, civilian LPNs are hired on some garrisons in order to free up Medics for deployment to Afghanistan.

Please don't shout at us just because our country does something differently from yours.

I'm going to school for nursing now but have a BS in Criminal Justice. I was looking for the same thing. You could work as a nurse in a prison. I worked as a Corrections Officer and we had nurses as well. All of the nurses thought it was interesting. Or you could try to see about working in a crime lab with the dead bodies and things like that.

Look up PACT. Its the police and crisis team in Calgary. Usually it's one police officer and one mental health worker (often times a nurse).
