If you currently work OT for time and one half pay will you continue to work the hours for straight pay? What do you think of the new OT legislation and how it will effect nursing? What do you think of the exemptions for male dominated professions? ie, Police officers, firefighters and EMTs.
I saw a sign in a shop one time that was appropriate for hospital staffing I believe. " LACK OF PLANNING ON YOUR PART DOES NOT CONSTITUTE AN EMERGENCY ON MINE." And your absolutely correct, if one is willing to work straight time when they cry 'emergency' then it will set a precedent they will be glad to inforce later. I really believe that eventually this change in regulations will have an enormous impact on all American workers. And I don't see it being positive. What incentive does a business have to hire employees if the existing ones can be forced to pick up the slack for no increase in pay? Eventually supply and demand may get us some premium but it won't be time and one half if the employeers can avoid it. The old regulations were the only reason we have received it up until now. Without the protection we can see our OT pay eroded away.If it's THAT big of an emergency the hospital can afford to pay. Staffing is THEIR responsibility - not the nurses'. However, if they can find people who will work OT for straight time whenever they cry wolf (or emergency), then they will be less inclined to offer OT pay. Supply and demand.

I agree with that. But sometimes i choose to stay OT because i feel as if my duties w/ some PT's aren't complete. The extra money for OT would be fantastic, but patients come first. (Please don't take this to mean that i believe that PT's do not come first to you too.) Just saying that i don't mind staying longer regardless of extra pay.(sometimes).
Take care.
I am actually from Oregon (and new to this forum :) HI!)...our paramedics are privately owned and get half the pay I do working just as hard (honestly..harder!). SO I don't know much about publicly owned ambulance companies...
I really don't believe in my area that is it a male dominated issue at all...I mean, Nursing is more a female dominated issue in my area than paramedics! Women are nurses..both are paramedics in my area of the globe... In fact, I have seen more females in the field of paramedics because nursing is failing in excitement and fulfillment in my area... It really makes me curious...I get 2x as much as paramedics..yet they prefer it...guess it is that whole not having to bow to an MD to get an order for a telfa pad for your patient...let alone some triple antibiotic ointment! (where I live..nothing nothing goes on a patient..even OTC without an MD order...RN orders are failing to exist because RN orders are not insurable through healthcare insurance here).
But as far as OT..my poor hubby, who is a paramedic gets the diss big time! He comes home every night 2-3 hours late, and won't get time 1/2 unless..unless he has worked 40 hours that week...and they are tricky (same with my facility) to make sure that no one goes over that in a week...including staying late to do the lovely charting deal! He is always tired, gave his all at work, and gets nothing extra for it. He had a heart attack at 31 from this...still wants to do it! Uhggggg...I would have said thank you but NO! LOL!
OT isn't my thing...I won't do it...will never do it..and heck..I am Part time because of tax purposes and family (if I become the 'bread winner' we are in a super high tax bracket and still stuggling with trying to get our own home ).
Straight pay...that is all I get...I guess it is great...I don't have much of a choice (no union at Masonic homes! OH goodness no one would dare!)...

Overtime for straight pay? Thanks but no-thanks. Of course, I rarely work overtime even for time and a half. Just lazy, I guess.
Oregon nurse..you aren't lazy...just very rational and reasonable...something the state doesn't understand. Be strong, and I have to believe that our thoughts are not wrong!
Then again..we are Oregon..something very unique...be yourself! And never let anyone tell you that is wrong!!!!! Take those days off that matter to you! Because..when all is said an done..it isn't the days off you think you got off..or your employer..it is the fun from your friends and family that matter..and heck..I will give a wave too if I know what direction to wave!!!!!!! LOL!!!!!!:)
Getting into this discussion a little late, sorry!
I will not work OT for straight pay. I will stay over once in a while if they are really desperate for a nurse (which is almost every day :chuckle), but only for time and a half. I practically have to fight to go home on time as it is. It really irks me because I feel that when I have done my duties and my shift is complete, I should be entitled to go home. I think that most Nurses will be much more reluctant to stay over if they are only receiving straight pay and if Nurses are some how 'forced' to stay over for straight pay, I think there will be a lot of people who will leave the profession.
Here in Cali..hospitals are saving money to pay OT instead of paying all of our trav. and agency. At my hospital there is so much OT that even the Trav turn it down...We even get double time on weekends and holidays
Where are you incentral valley? I live and work here and I put in more than my share of o/t.
