OK, let me vent a little. I live in Parkersburg, and around here, they don't want to pay RN's squat. It is unfair. I took a paycut to go work private practice, but to me that was worth not working holidays or weekends. But even the hospitals don't pay squat. I only took a 50 cent paycut per hour to have my own office. I read some of the other posts saying they make 40-50 dollars an hour. That is twice what I am making now.
I wander how beneficial it would be to get a BSN or MSN. Living in WV, I can't see where I would make that much more money with those letters behind my name.
Thanks for listening to me vent!
What experienced nurses make in WV is criminal. With 30 years experience in mostly ICU, now working telemetry, am making $21.00/hr. Starting pay might sound pretty good to new grads, but keep in mind that after a few years your pay will stagnate. I keep reading articles about the nursing shortage in WV but it sounds to me like they want lots of new nurses graduating every year so they can keep wages down. Absolutely nothing is done to keep older, experienced nurses on the job and to reward them for their knowledge and hard work.

I think this is true everywhere, except in union areas.
Making low wages here in Texas, too.
I live and work in southwestern Pa. I work at Uniontown Hosp in the ER. I have been a nurse for 8 years and I make $19.26/hr. The graduate nurse at our hosp starts at (I believe) $18.00/hr. I also do not get any critical care deferential and very little shift differential. I know that we all think everyone else is making more, but after talking to more and more nurses, it seems we all think we are working too hard with too much responsibility for the amount of money we are making.
I'm in Indiana making $25/hr. Been a RN for 7yrs. My sister in W.Va makes $18/hr and has been a RN for 30yrs. I quit telling her how much I made about 2 years ago because it made her feel so bad. Ha!! But when we visit we do notice the cost of living is a lot less. Groceries are lower and good ol' WalMart prices are less in W.Va. Does that help???
