Nurses from UK in canada

World UK

Hi all

For the nurses who have moved from the UK to Canada on this forum, what have been your impressions on the canadian health system as compared to the NHS. Do you thinK that the NHS is more organised or not and is how we nurse in UK better or not. Im psyche trained (project 2000) RMN working in AB.

Just curious:nurse:

Well my CARNA form will be heading out this week...so we will see! Then comes the big decison....if I get turned down and have to re train can we afford to do that whilst trying to emigrate and start a fresh in a new country, whilst also thinking of starting a family, in the next few years and planning a wedding! or do I go back to my roots and try getting a secretary/PA role and go back to the 9-5 work life???? while my other half does the shift!

arghhhh......:banghead:

If my DH didn't work from home here in Canada I'm not sure how we'd manage the childcare, they have such long holidays in the summer & seem to have so many odd days off school - like tomorrow for instance! Work is crappy about days off too - either A/L or stat days! Honestly I don't know how people manage if they both work full time!

I bet in a few years time Canada will follow down the route of adult only, peads only ect just like the UK!

reading the UK modernising nursing document makes me think the UK will return to generalized nursing probal degree only.

and altough my pin classes me as a RNA i was sold short on my training as more theroy on mental helath and LD would have been benefically instead i was in situation which i had only my exprinces and those of my colleague managing acutely ill paitents with other issues. mother and baby i know very little and peads even less.

limited theory no real practical

:nurse: Hi to everyone, Just joined the forum!

I have just been offered a job by Alberta Health Services. I did go through an agency, Geneva Health, but really don't feel that they did much! I'm still waiting for CARNA to confirm registration. I did "old fashioned" training so covered everything! They have had everything for 3 months, but I believe they can take at least 4 months. I've been told that I can give a choice of 3 hospitals in Alberta to work in. I'm being employed for surgery/urology. My only concern is that the job is temporary. Does anyone have any info on how likely it is to be taken on permanently? If not, any ideas to how my husband and I can remain in Canada permanently? Any ideas on which hospitals? I'm considering Calgary but will listen to any advice! Many thanks! DD:)

Hi and welcome

Unless going the PR route via PNP route then all work permits are temporary although once in Canada can apply for PR.

I rang a the HR department at The Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton and they said that the best person to speak to was Geneva Health in London as it would be they who would recruit me.

If I can do it myself I will. God knows you cannot depend on anyone else to do stuff for you.

I fully intend to apply for a job once I finish training, as both my wife and I have agreed that the sooner we get to Canada, the better. This is mainly because we have two young sons who we wish to benefit from living over there.

As I will need to do Paediatric and Obs/Gyn work to get my full licence, do you have any idea what these rotations cost and how long they take?

Hie everyone I am new in this forum and am interested in going to Alberta, as with the above I am trying to get a job by myself without the help of Geneva Health but the Edmonton HR said they only recruit via Geneva does anyone know if it is the norm in Alberta or there is a way for me to get a job without using an agency? Please help

Hi

Just to let you know. I trained P2K and finished in Sept 2001 specialising in psyche. I did not have any problems with my hours fulfilliing the canadian requirements. Maybe each uni was different, im not sure but I do have quite a few psyche friends here who also did P2K nursing. However, I also have friends in UK who attended a different uni who are having problems with their hours not being enough.
