  1. Hey all Patients who are oscillated in our unit are usualy on Rocuronium to keep them still....although I do think our unit is looking at using Roc a little less and will probaby go for the old morphine and midaz option. x
  2. Hey I work on PICU at a childrens hospital in Birmingham, England. I work on a 20 bedded unit (can go up to 21 beds and in the consultation process of expanding to 28 beds!) We work Long Days, Early's, Late's and nights a mixture of all and we self roster. On each shift we should have a minimum of 25 nurses. At the moment we are also experiencing a quiet time which is very nice! I have worked here for nearly 2 years. We have a good team of Intensivists and Dr's and work well as a team! We cover anything really majority cardiac patients, we also have a very active retrival team, we do ECLS and the usual...CVVH, Osolaitors, Nitric ect. Really interesting reading about everyone else! x
  3. As a student I was always very nervous about IV drugs! Why on earth would she administer it? We were always taught to work to our limitations and IV drugs were drilled into us as a limitation! Mind there are some very confident students out there, maybe she thought she was doing the right thing! I work in PICU where we do administer IV pot, but it HAS to go through a central line and be given over one hour! x
  4. Hey Jan I got your txt back too, just haven't had time to reply and watching the cost, just glad finally got it to work! ha ha We are gutted to be back and really missing Canada, we had a fab week in Cagary after leaving Edmonton, we had more heat and snow! We found a wedding venue and fingers crossed can start planning now! How was your conference? We are missing canada that much we are thinking of looking at the normal visa route and see where that take us! How's things with you x xx
  5. Hey I have been looking into nrsing in Alberta and have sent my application to CARNA, and still waiting for a reply! I know in Alberta you have to be trained in all aspects of nursing. I was wondering if this was the case for BC? I have heard british nurses can work there in the chosen field? I am a paediatric nurse and have just over a years experience in PICU. Any information is greatfully received x Lisa x
  6. I personally hate being off work sick... and have currently had 4 days off with sickness and I always feel so guilty phoning in sick but know there are peope out there who take the mick....my other half gets "an always there award" of £60 worth of shopping vouchers if he doesn't have a day off sick in a year, I think this is a great insentive and maybe people would not phone in sick so easily if there was this insentive! but then why should you have to provide an insentive to go to work! ha ha x
  7. Hey I have also logged in and a few things are missing, they have asked for my nursing hours breakdown again, which I am sure was in the envelope but hey! I remember someone saying it was taking about 6 months to get a decision and I have been told they are very busy! Mine shows most of the things back, as I had a letter from the NMC saying they had been sent. I have just sent what was aked on the IEN booklet, they will contact you if there is anything missing, I should think! Keep in touch on how you get on! x
  8. Well I know that I work hard and the majority of people I work with do, we care for the patients we look after and try our best! The NHS will never run smoothly, there are too many fat cat, who have no medical background running the show and don't understand the strains of working on the floor! and get paid way too much for the privilage of their nice big office....!
  9. Ooh Whisper which website is that then? would be interested to look a few up myself! I'm sure I took part in that survey that helped shape the tv programme, was it a YouGov survey? You know if managers we not paid so much to sit bhind a desk and do buger all and the money was spent on nurses where it's needed maybe there wouldn't be this problem! The NHS is in such a state and I wonder if part of it is because there are so many unemployed and peope on benefits the money isn't being paid into the fund! but thats just a hunch! I had a placement in and A&E dep as a student and was amazed by the rudeness and ungreatfulness of people, parents dialing 999 for their child when they had constipation, then once in the departent fed them with crisps and chocolate from the machine, while they ran around bored! Another time I remember being stood waiting to receive an patient from an ambulance whilst the child was wheeled in receiving cardiac masssage from a nurse, a parent came up to me and asked why that child was being seen before them and that they had been there for an hour already! I was totally gobsmacked! x
  10. It does all boil down to us nurses, I missed the tv programme as ooh I was at work finishing off my 12 hour shift! Yeah there are some nurses out there who really don't care or do any work, but the majority of us care and work our asses off!!! The news were moaning about our PICU not having enugh beds....what can you do..they are closing other childrens wards as DGH's, which gives our hospital less beds to transfer out to which in turn causes bed blocking! Stupid! I think it's time for a tv crew to follow the good work and had work us nurses do! ooh it just angers me! HA ha x
  11. Just wanted to vent my anger and fustration at all the bad press BCH is getting at the moment! The news never focus on the good work us nurses and Dr's do!! Wouldn't you just ove to invite the press to work one of our 12 hour shifts with us and see how hard we work! Grrr x x
  12. Thanks for that, once I have my info back from CARNA, that will be my next step! If I haven't heard from them by the time we come for oyr holiday in may I may go and visit them in person! ha ha x x
  13. Hey all I thought this temporary permit from CARNA, would make it that little bit easier to practice while you got your full registration...but I don't think that is so....I'm only childrens quaified and currently in limbo, sent my form off back in feb but not hopefull! WE are trying to way up what to do, do we go just for the better lifestyle and way of life and I change career and go back to my roots of being a secretary, or do we pay for me to re train but can we aford to do this...or do we sty in England...it's just so so hard! x x
  14. Mmm all this talk about curry.....we have never got round to making our own from scratch....we always say we will but don't seem to have the time and it's usually easier to go to local urry house to get one and we have never found a good recepie.....any suggestions! ha ha ooh I want curry for my tea now not the healthy grilled chicken, jacket potatoe and veg! x
  15. Hey Liz I am a Childrens nurse and work in PICU for a year now..... I am in the process of sending off my CARNA application (we want to head to Alberta), I think the best thing for you to do is find the area you want to live and work in and then find out who there registering body is and contact them....they will tell you how many hours as a registered nurse you will need ect. I know in Alberta it is tricky as Canadians are general nurse trained so that includes mental health, adult and obstetrics. I know I did very little mental health during my training and none of the others! I have also heard that ater this year they will only be accept nurses who hold a degree! I am finding the process very fustration and hard work...but my application will go off soon so we will see but I expect if I want to work as a nurse there will be the need to do more training! As for looking at jobs search for childrens hospital in the area you want to work and they should have job listings, I have spokent to The Stollery (edmonton) and Calgary Childrens hospital and they were both kean to meet me as they said they need nurses over there, but who knows with the current climate! Anything else feel free to PM me x
