Nurses pay

Published

I keep reading how nurses get paid so little, but from my understanding the pay is about 40,000 + when you first graduate. How much do you make, if you don't mind me asking? I've applied to nursing school and am curious if I have been misled? I live in the Chicagoland area if that helps any...

Thanks!

From what I have seen, I think RN's get paid less in my state then most of the others. I am not a nurse, hope to be someday!! But I do have a friend that works at the hospital and she stated that they hire RN's at $15.57/hr starting out. I am also told that hospitals have a tendency to pay less then other locations, but searching at some of the local hospitals to work, I think we have 8-10 within 20 miles of me, the most I have seen was in the $16/hr range and the lowest was in the $14/hr range. The sad thing is that I currently have a job that pays more then what some nurses start out at, and my job didn't require a degree..... Go figure....

sierranic,

Are you speaking of RN or GN? That's a big enough reason to move to another state.

Talking about pay differences. In Waco, TX, GNs were starting out at 16/hr and that was 3 yrs ago. How unfortunate.

No, it was RN, and to top that off the LPN's make only a few less than that.... Kinda makes you wonder why you would go to school longer for only a few $$.

I forgot to add this in the last post, but a hospital close to me offers the student nurse internship, which pays $10/hr and once you graduate you get $1/hr for every hour you worked as a student and your base pay as a GN goes to $11/hr...... Which I can't understand why they wouldn't pay you more than that.... It makes no sense... But I guess that's corporate America for ya!!

This is what it says on the web site.... XXXX's are the Hospital's name!! Don't know if I should state which one it is!!

They grossly underpay because they can, and they will continue until nurses start saying "NO".

From my experience nurses pay maxes out at 10 years. Then raises become very sporadic. You may go several years without any raise at all. Please tell me what other profession fails to compensate its most experienced workers.

Wow! Assistants make more than that here.

Locally, new RNs start at $23 (or above).

That's the second or third time I've heard this, and I just cringe every time I hear it, "Only two to three dollars more an hour". No disrespect sierranic, but if your not in college you need to go back and start with math. Let's crunch some numbers. Let's just take the lesser of the two, 2 dollars an hour. That's $3840.00 more per year tacked onto your check, and let's start with an average career of say thirty years = $115,200.00. That measly two dollars an hour didn't do anything more for you than purchase a brand new 3brm 2bth 2 car garage home in the country or 3-4 brand new fully loaded cars straight off the lot with Northstar satellite systems. Let's not even discuss three dollars an hour more which is nearly a quarter of a million dollars over a career!!!:balloons: That's why you go back to college!

The salary over here in UK is lower than that of USA. a newly qualified nurse gets £16,500 per year. Thats low compared to other professions i.e police firemen etc

I think that you can make the money you want in nursing...

You won't get rich, but you certainly should not starve.

You can work pretty much what you want to work.

They certainly can use you somewhere. If you want $$$, go for agencies. If you want benies, go for a full time job...

Just don't forget to take time out and live...otherwise, you will regret nursing. It is very stressful when you work too many 12 hour shifts.

Good luck..
