Nurses are Pathetic!!

Nurses General Nursing

I have been reading thread after thread on this forum and I have come to one conclusion. We are all a pathetic bunch. We take abuse that most other human beings would not put up with. We are physically, mentally and emotionally abused by doctors, managers, patients, and families. We work ungodly hours, skip our much needed breaks without pay for months and years on end. And this goes on and on and on. The stories are endless. Then we are all shocked when a nurse who has had enough finally cracks and administers 32 vials of Dilantin and kills a patient. Is this so different than any other human being who finally after years and years of this abuse, just cannot take it anymore? I think not. When are we all going to stand up and demand decent pay, decent working conditions, and respect? Well, the answer is never because we are not a solid group. We have no autonomy or solidarity because we are a weak profession. We pit one against another. We ***** and backstab. We deserve all the abuse that is dealt to us. In nursing school, we are taught to make beds, empty bedpans and clean dentures. Instead we should get vast lessons in how to deal with some of the real issues that face us today. We are understaffed, overworked, pushed to the breaking point. But yet, the martyr instinct kicks in, we get up and go back and endure more of the same. When is enough, enough? When are we all going to come together and and start shouting about our working conditions and wages? We make less than a crew on road construction or a plumber. And look what we do. We are responsible for peoples lives. I went to work down the road as my current employer is union and I felt that maybe the non union hospital down the road would be a better place. Well, it is not, it is worse. 13 nurses have quit in the 6 weeks I have worked there. I won't renew my contract. It is just too unsafe. The hospital is all about profit at the expense of some great nurses. They even charge for an individual bandaid. It is ridiculous. I have decided that as soon as I can afford to, I'm getting out. I will no longer be a member of a profession that eats its young while at the same time, taking unwarrented abuse from unapreciative doctors that we bend over backwards for. Its not about making a living any more, it is about retaining some self respect, free of abuse by doctors, managers and other nurses who have nothing better to do than put a knife in your back the minute you turn around. At least at walmart I won't have to worry about making a life threatening mistake because I'm overwhelmed by what is required of me each day.

self pity. god. quit if you cant handle it.

Hell yes I'm burned out! Ya think? I spend more of my day dealing with emotional jello from my co-workers and the constant barrage of S%^T form management then I do with my patients.

Self pity? I'm drowning in it. Being expected on a daily basis to stay and extra half hour while my drag-butt Charge plays who is my favorite today while posting assignments. I bring it up at meetings- suddenly the room is as quiet as a library. How many nurses say "Oh, it's just not worth the trouble?"

You guys got me pegged. Brilliant. Please don't give me any of your "support".

I'm wishing I didn't have a job right now and I'm sure as heck not an angel.

I'm an angry male nurse. This troll says bring it.

Hmm. Tempers are flaring. Times are tough. This is all true -but what is REALLY needed here -at least in the short term, is an escape valve. Venting can be good, but I prefer a diversion (like riding my motorcycle, or smoking a fine cigar). No two ways about it, the originator has some valid points. Many (most? ) nurses DO need to find their backbone and stand up for themselves. We have all (I expect) been yelled at by a doc at one time or another (some of us -(hand is raised) have yelled right back at them) but overall, there is no reason to scare off the newbies who are still in school -there really ARE fine places to work, with good people as colleagues (sp). There is no such thing as a 'perfect job', but I'll be the first to say that I've worked in far worse jobs than this one, and in fields that had far worse conditions.

I'm sorry you feel that way lorster, but you are surely not the only one who feels this way...I assure you. I don't think nurses are pathetic, rather that they are "angels". They take abuse and turn the other cheek, they care for the ill/injured and they do it while accepting little in the way of pay and respect. That's an angel in my book.

First, you are an idiot if you think you are an angel because you take abuse.

I agree with almost everything the OP stated. All those nurses who don't take their lunches and breaks and go hours on end without going to the restroom have no one to blame but themselves. People treat you like crap because you will let them. If a doc cops an attitude you just tell them if they have a problem with your care talk to the charge and walk away.

Nursing is not a calling, you are not an angle this and that. It is a job. Thats it. When I am at work I take care of my patients to the best of my ability, when I clock out i am all about my family. I will never allow anyone to treat me like crap or go without luch. Many nurses need to get a back bone and stand up for themself.

No. Nursing is a calling. If it's just a job, do something else. No we're not angels or God gifted.....but we make a difference. Sorry u do not get ur props. Too bad! And be realistic. With a BSN u can get excellent pay and all the perks u want. Industry has a lot of respect for BSN prepared people and they have no fear that you could possibly be competition. Really, if u can't see why nursing is soooo cool..... try something else. You are qualified to do many other things.

Do we need to become a team? Yes! Yes! and uh... Yes! But I hate working with people who are just "doing a job." The nursing shortage would not matter so much without people who are "just doing a job." Ever heard of the 90/10 rule. 90% of the work is done by 10% of the work force. Please find another job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you, for increasing health care costs without benefiting anyone except yourself. Sorry, I tend to understate my opinion. Please amplify my statements by a factor of 100. Oh, yeah, nurses don't do math.

Look, if u do not like people, get a degree in marketing or philosophy.

Have i been clear? U people who are just doing a job, find some other way to entertain yourself. I can, sincerely, help you to another profession.

Wow. I am changing careers. I witnessed layoff after layoff after layoff in my last job as globalization took its toll on the company. Recently, the company was bought by a foreign company seeking to achieve greater global footprint. I remember working long hours under a lot of stress with a lot of fear. As we lost teammates, the remaining folks' workload increased.

I am preparing to enter nursing school. I hope to be an anesthetist someday. You can run into crap anywhere in any job. I think that it's important to have a good manager and a good team. Even better is to have a great company (stuff runs downhill...if the top is rotten, the lower ranks feel it. Backstabbing occurs in troubled environs among men and women. It indicates perceived lack of opportunity as I see it). I will vote with my feet if necessary... change hospitals, etc. As a nurse, there are so many options open to us. We can work in research, clinical trials, pharmaceutical marketing, medical writing, etc., etc.

If unhappy, change jobs... Advance your education. You don't necessarily have to change drastically.

I am curious where some of these hospitals are that are troublesome to some folks. Are they in economically depressed areas? Are they in areas that don't have much competition?

Finally, it's also important to look inward. Burnout can make everything look bad.

I still think nursing offers those who practice it a greater amount of power in the work arena. Much greater than many other jobs.

I watched a doctor chew out a poor new grad the other morning in front of the entire shift change. I guess he does this frequently. Why do we put up with this? Why do we not band together and put a stop to this crap? He chewed her out because the blood glucose was not on the computer yet as the glucometer had not been docked. This is part of what is wrong. This is one small example. This is what I hate. We all stood around and allowed him to carry on and reduce her to tears. And I am as guilty as the rest but I am the traveler and had to be silent.

What is the worst thing that could have happened if you said something? Do you actually think they would have fired you for supporting her? Why didnt you take the Tech aside and tell her that he was wrong for being the way he did and console her, while being a collegue and supporting her by bringing it to your managers attention?

Maybe YOU did not read my post. I said I DO MY JOB TO THE BEST OF MY ABILITY. My patients LOVE me. I get asked all the time to do home health for my patients. My patients ask for me by name and I meet all their family's. The family bring me cards and cookies and other treats.

By the way, I was refering to the person who thinks they are an angle because they get treated like crap. If you think I need to get a new job than I suppose you are talking about all those people who said they would not work for 11 bucks an hour.

NURSING IS NOT A CALLING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree, no one should take abuse...I have in the past and I will not again...I speak up all the time when need be....I think most people tend not to say anything when they are "NEW", for fear basically...

We do it because we can. Not for pay or a pat on the back.

I do it for the pay. If I was not payed what I am I would not be wiping butts and being yelled at by the pts, management, doctors, and everyone else who sees nurses as their own personal servant. Absolutely I appreciate the happiness that does come from the job, making a difference, feeling important and knowledgable, and connecting with pts. But if it were not for the money I would not work as a nurse.

Well, I don't do it simply because it pays well or at least better than most -but by that same token, I'm not "called" to it, either. I LIKE being an RN, but there was no religious experience that called me to it anymore than I had a calling to ride motorcycles -well, maybe I did as far as bikes are concerned :) but seriously, if I weren't getting paid to do my job, I certainly wouldn't be doing it. I'm no mother theresa -and I'm not a male Florence Nightingale, either.

Missionaries are "called". I was HIRED.
