hello everyone, I am a male perioperative nurse in working in a teaching hospital in Nigeria, I am currently pursuing registration with the CRNM, I have sent them all required documents and completed the required English test, I expect my application to be processed in the next couple of weeks, I don't know if I can get help from anyone here on securing employment after my registration is done, since this would help secure a work visa in Canada, help anyone.....

Check the forum out as much already been posted about working and finding an employer in the province you want. Best thing though is to approach hospitals in the areas you want to work, also consider sending in your CV/resume

Thanks, but I also wish to ask about the nurses' union of manitoba, I got a few hospitals' info from their website, and I'll start sending them emails now, is it compulsory I become a member of this union in order to practice in Manitoba? here in Nigeria, every nurse is a member of the national association of nigerian nurses and midwives by default upon completion of their training, Is this the same in canada? any views on this?

To work you need to hold a practice permit/registration document issued by the provincial college of either RNs or LPNs. Apart from being a quality control type agency, they do very little for the average nurse.

Hospitals, public health, etc jobs are unionized. You join the union the day you sign your employment papers with the health authority. The union then bargains for your wages and benfits on a contractual basis.

Well, not exactly the same. You don't become a member of the CRNM or any other college of nursing in Canada by default once you pass the CRNE. You have to apply for registration and pay the registration fee to be a member, and you have to renew your registration and pay your fees every year. You also have to participate and document continuing competence activities each year.

As for the union question, Fiona59 is correct. If you work for a hospital, public health, corrections, the Victorian Order of Nurses or many of the continuing care facilities, you will become a union member when you accept employment.
