Apr 21, 201016 yr That can indeed cause incontinence. Funny, isn't it? OK, not really, but you'd think our bladders would get stronger from that "training," not weaker. lol Do whatever you can to go when you gotta go. You gotta take care of yourself, or you won't be able to take care of your patients!
Apr 21, 201016 yr I hate having to "hold it."Sometimes I sincerely wish I could cath myself and just go with a leg bag all day.If it weren't for the pain and risk of infection r/t catheterization, it would make life so much easier.
Apr 21, 201016 yr Author Lol yea i know...im horrible at that.Im only 24 so im afraid of that.the other day at the end of my shift i was talking to a patient and then i was like..have i gone to the restroom???horrible i know but i def wanna work on that.

Apr 21, 201016 yr When you have to go you have to go! I have IBS and used to wait tables. I was a cocktailer and when my section was full had 9 tables. Most servers usually have 3 to 4. Anyway, I was at the computer when it hit, and it was getting past the 5 table point and getting to rush time. I asked the bartender to watch my tables and get any new ones. THANK GOD she had been paying attention to what I had and needed (and could read my handwriting!) I was in the bathroom for all of 2 minutes when a server comes in the bathroom to ask if I'm coming back out or not. Meanwhile, I'm sweating and in horrendous pain on the toilet, and I'm like "I will be out in a minute!!" I hear our stupid manager outside the door ask the server to ask me when, and I belted out "when I get done having diarrhea!!! Leave me alone for a minute! How bout you go check on my tables instead of bothering me!"I'd have to say that was one of the most miserable moments of my life. This was 4 years ago, and I still feel like it's yesterday. It's really not so convenient when you have a million things to take care of at the same time, but hopefully you have good coworkers that can watch a minute for you:) Just thought I would share this story. Thought it was funny. Needless to say, no one ever checked on me after that when I had to go to the bathroom for whatever reason. LOL:lol2:

Apr 21, 201016 yr im young and have stress incont. my mother is also a nurse and twinkles on her self sometimes.
Apr 22, 201016 yr That's crazy! As long as my patients are not in cardiac arrest, I'm using the restroom if I have to go. Anything else can wait the few minutes it takes. I am human like everyone else and I have basic needs. To allow to be treated that way is nuts!
Apr 22, 201016 yr Pee when you have to pee. PLEASE. I gave myself a bladder infection a while back by holding it in all the time. Taught myself a damn good lesson in the process because they are so uncomfortable. The world won't end because you have to pee. I will NEVER do that to myself again.
Apr 22, 201016 yr i'm with medic2rn, unless you are doing cpr...go take care of business. that's just nuts!!

The world won't end because you have to pee. I will NEVER do that to myself again.i'm with medic2rn, unless you are doing cpr...go take care of business. that's just nuts!!As above. I'll never forget a comical "portrait of an ICU Nurse" tacked onto a bulletin board when I was a student. What I clearly remember, her bladder portrayed as a big tank of some sort (she may have had rollerskates for feet but I'm not sure:)) and it struck me as a bit odd that the poor thing couldn't take two minutes to relieve herself- and wondering what kind of holy hel l nursing must be if it is so insanely busy on a regular basis it ruled out so basic a health requirement. But, truthfully, I did not see younger nurses becoming incontinent en masse. The legend has enough truth to make it seem plausible, though. The way I really feel about it- insisting on nutrition, hydration and elimination is a psychological plus for me. Because even if the whole day has been in the crapper- I feel that is just a piece of me you all are not getting!!. Even if it's a granola bar and water. The only thing to do is be proactive, because it's actually easier to stay in the fray than it is to stop and take a brief time-out.
