Am curious. How do you do daycare/sitters? Cuz i'm pondering going back to work after i have this baby, probably by early summer when the baby is a bit older. Anyway, i have a 3 year old and a 15 mth old as well. I know daycare would be expensive, i've already called around. is all i have to say. lol $720 for 5 days a week (regardless of how often they are there) for my 2 boys, NOT counting the new baby. So my DH and i decided that if i go back, its more to get me back in the game than anything, the money will be nice but it HAS to fit our family. So probably part time or prn will be what i do. No more than 2 days a week. We are going to TRY to do it so DH can be home with them, but if not i need a backup system. But everywhere i call they can't be dropped off before 630am-7am and have to be picked up by 5 or 6. WELL the problem with that is that i will most likely be working 12 hour shifts (that's all the hospital offers) and they are from 6-6. So i'm curious, what other options should i explore??? I'd really prefer a private sitter, but i know that can be costly as well. Someone to come to my home, ya know? Its not really about the money, i mean not the only thing, ya know??? So i'm just curious, how do you guys do it??
Are any of your spouses nurses as well? My dh and I are thinking about starting a family but were worried about how we were going to handle childcare.
Yep we are both nurses. Its kinda nice, we can talk "shop" or we can talk family and kids. lol Plus we KNOW the ins and outs and can help each other as we need too and know what's going on with the ways to do things in scheduling for nurses. make sense?
I have three kids. 5 year old-in Kindergarten. 3 year old and 6 month old-at home. No daycare, no babysitter. I work 3 days a week, 12 hours. hubby works 5-12 on the days I don't work. but he has quite the flexible schedule, so much so that his boss calls me and asks me when he can work.
Of course, this limits him to his current job only, until the youngest is in school. He can't move to ahigher paying one, b/c the hours would not work. even if i agreed w/ daycare, we couldn't afford it!
I do PRN around dh's schedule. This is the only way for me, not cause I cannot afford daycare but because I do not want to use it.It has worked well for 4 years since the birth of my youngest. Can you try this>?????
good luck and congrats on your pregnancy, you will be a busy momma!!!!:)
This is what i do. I work on my dh days off, he works 6 days on and 3 days off, and every other weekend, and probably will continue to do this until my kids are in school.
Good luck in finding something.
well, what can I say, I went back to student nurse training when my son, now 13 was 6 weeks old, I spent a fortune on childminding (shift pattern didn't allow nurserys or kindergarden) but it was well worth it. My first year qualified and working as a staff nurse I had 2 boys aged 1 and 3 at the time. I only stuck it out the year as I couldn't afford the childminding fees compared to my monthly wage. After a year out I took a night duty job to suit my child minding arrangements - didn't get any day sleep though. My boys are now 11 and 13 and are very helpful - they were given the choice - mum at work or home - they chose work. It gets much easier, and it is worth the cost. I am now doing well in my career, but family always comes first. I know it's not the answer you're looking for, but if you're determined and your hearts in it, you will succeed!

I noticed that when I read my kid's ages in my post . . . . they are now almost 23, almost 21, 16 and 4. :)
Snowymountain responded on this page and previous pages though and she started the thread so I think it is ok.
