Hi everyone

I am FNP since January 2018; having struggle finding job in area. I applied everywhere; all the positions require atleast 1 or 2 years of experience.

Having trouble finding a job as NP than RN.

there are plenty of jobs for RNs but not NPs.

When i decided to go for further education in nursing as hospice RN, thought i will be working and helping more of my hospice patients and families. However there are no jobs in hospice for NPs at this time and even though they do, require experience as NP in field.

How do i get experience if noone wants to hire me.

frustration.

please help.

If you only wish to work in a hospice setting then you need to network with those who work in that environment. You can volunteer or even take an RN position for a bit so that you can get your foot in the door. I agree with many of the posts that reaching out to NP organizations and others who work in the field is a wise move.

My clinic post experience requirements for new hires, but we still hire the occasional new graduate who had had clinical rotations with us or we are referred by another provider. Don't give up. If hospice work is what you want to do then find a way.

Best of luck!

Your school isn't gonna make the difference between the ability to nail an interview and sure af isn't gonna get someone to forego an experience requirement.

Oh yes it does. Here is a direct quote from every Nurse Practitioner position listed at the Allina Health system in Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN:

"Allina Health does not hire new grads from all academic institutions. Many proprietary on-line schools do not meet Allina Health's standards due to the minimal oversight of the student's clinical experience, the high faculty/student ratio, and the lack of focus on national certification standards in the curriculum."

Decide carefully where you go to school.

Thank you! I knew I wasn't wrong, but some people just like to argue.

I don't blame employers for being critical of online programs. My FNP was an online program but I had over 20 years RN experience. Even so, my first 2 years made me nervous. And I'm the kind of guy who jumps in looking for the most difficult cases in an attempt to learn as much as possible.

That being said, I've had several students following me from online programs who don't have the same aggressive approach to learning who scare me, even in their last semester. Every student I have, I make them do some kind of assessment, diagnose, and develop a treatment plan. Rarely do I implement their plan because I'm just not seeing evidence based practice or guidelines being used. And believe it or not, I'm not even seeing differential diagnoses being used.

It doesn't surprise me to hear, "...does not hire new grads from all academic institutions."

Note I specified nailing an interview. Nobody can help not even the getting to interview process which in this case you wouldn't even get through initial stages of hr.

I take issue with the presumption that all online courses are created equal when I just showed how some online schools have higher clinical expectations than even some brick and mortar schools. The fact is most here agree that all np education is lacking even in solid educational establishments. It's important to identify and call out bad schools. Not lump in broad categories of schools simply because some for profit schools have poor outcomes. Schools like frontier are setting high bars for education and they specifically were founded by one of our pioneers of nurse midwifery and family nursing. This school (frontier nursing service specifically) was doing this work before advance practice was a gleam in the University of Colorado's eye. Sucks that places like Walden bring down the lott, but as many stated... That ships sailed. It's still important to keep pressure where it's warranted and not to bury schools simply for being based online.

Amen to that! We always pay attention to the school for new graduates. We all know the handful of online programs who churn out less than qualified graduates. Maybe they will turn out to be good in time, but who has the time to teach them all they did not get in their for pay program. Our HR will not even forward for consideration... If you have to select an online option at least select one from a reputable school.

Mike, are you in the San Antonio, TX area? I've seen several of your posts and have tried to message you, but I am unable to. I am about to graduate as an FNP in the San Antonio, TX area and looking for employment. I've applied to several places, however some have gotten back with me that they are looking for someone with experience.
