CA furnishing requirnment

Hello, I'm currently working as a NP in New York state and planning to work in California. My California RN license is 'inactive' status and I'm in the process of finger print to activate license.

I completed Advanced pharmacology course May/2012, graduated FNP program in May/2013, and have been working as an NP since July/2016. Technically, I completed Advanced pharmacology over 6 years ago and have about 2 years of NP work experience.

1. In my case, what would be the next step in order to obtain CA NP furnishing number?

2. Am I NOT eligible to work as NP in California until I have 5 years of NP experience? or Do I have to re-take Advanced Phamacology class again?

3. If I have to re-take Pharmacology, can this be online continuing education course (I found this online CE course: 45-Hour Advanced Pharmacology) or Does it have to be provided by NP program?

I am very confused that I found 2 different regulation document by CA BRN saying following:

https://www.rn.ca.gov/pdfs/regulations/npr-b-45.pdf

("ADVANCED PHARMACOLOGY CONTINUING EDUCATION COURSE FOR FURNISHING: A forty- five hour (45) continuing education (CE) course. The course must include a written test of knowledge to demonstrate comprehension of the course objectives.")

https://www.cdrewu.edu/sites/default/files/2018-01/NP%2520Certification.pdf

( In page 17: "The advanced pharmacology course must be completed at any nationally accredited master's or post-master's level academic Nurse Practitioner program. Continuing Education course(s) are not acceptable to meet the Nurse Practitioner Furnishing Number advanced pharmacology course requirement.")

The above online course I found cost $500 and I'm hesitant to signing up unless I get clear answer from BRN. The online CE provider cleary stated that they are approved by CA BRN for furnishing requirement. Then why CA BRN stated that they won't accept onlice CE course (in NP application form). Anyone can guide me? I'm still waiting CA BRN's response.

I would suggest that you wait for the BRN response to your question. Also try calling the BRN directly multiple times. You do fall in that "gray zone" where your Advanced Pharm course in your NP program is over 6 years old yet you only have 2 years of NP experience. You may be asked to retake an Advanced Pharm course that is approved by the BRN but I agree that you shouldn't sign up and pay for a course until you are told to do so and are given guidance on which courses are approved.

The link you posted at https://www.rn.ca.gov/pdfs/regulations/npr-b-45.pdf, refers to another requirement in the Furnishing License that allows you to prescribe (or furnish as we call it here) controlled substances. The initial application for Furnishing License, if approved, only allows you to furnish non-controlled drugs. You must still show proof that either your program covered controlled substances (as most CA NP programs now do) or you have completed a 45-hr CE course on prescribing controlled drugs. Such courses can be taken online in fact, CANP, offers one at no cost for members.

Hi I know this is a little old but what did you end up doing?

I am in a similar predicament and I'm considering taking that course as well. Did you end up taking it? How was it?

Hello ?

just wondering what you ended up doing also. I am also in the same predicament and am receiving no response from the board of nursing.

Thank you!

Yes! I took the one from Barkley. It's the 45 hour course specific for CA. Although at that time it was a little cheaper ?. I took it in 2019.

You're so welcome! Hope it works out for you! I don't think I ever received a response from the board of nursing, so I just went ahead and took the course. Good luck!

thanks a lot for the above info. I called the board but never got any reply.

Anyone know this 45 hr course 559/- from Barkley is for intial furnishing number in CA right?or it is just for the controlled substance prescription after the initial furnishing number. I am doing the endorsement and my pharmacology expiried as well.
