Nurse practitioner or Medical Doctor

Published

I am a former nursing major. Well I need up failing out of the program after 4 and a half years and I finished out with a Bachelor's of Arts. Regardless of my previous failure, I know that I want to help treat sick people so I refuse to let that discourage me. I am only 22 years old and want to go back to school to further my education. My question is I don't know if I should do a direct entry MSN program or take a year post baccalaureate pre med program and enroll in medical school. My passion is to take care of my patients and I do believe thathose who have so much passion are the ones that encounter so much difficulties. ..any suggestions please

Yes, I highly recommend getting a BSN first for many reasons, one being that often nurses find new passions and change their minds after being in the workforce for a while and getting valued experience. Since you have a bachelor's in another discipline, I would think you are eligible to apply to an accelerated BSN program. Some people have failures (in nursing and medicine) and then go on and succeed through perseverance and hard work. It might take some time and extra effort b/c of your past academic troubles, but it's the long term goal you need to remember.

Thanks .that was helpful

If you go the direct entry MSN route, suggest you ask for advice from professors who not only know your academic ability, but also the various nursing education pathways.

Thanks. I will do that

You most certainly commented, loud and clear.

Laugh away. You still won't hold a bachelor of science in nursing degree. You will still have a bachelor of arts in .. whatever that is.

This matured professional ( one "f' by the way) was pointing out that you will be continuing your education with a Bachelor of Arts. A much different pathway than a BSN.

Pixie.. isn't that coffee pot descaled by now?

Alrighty then!

Kenny,

What ever you do, don't let the for-profit schools get a cent of your loan money. Use the site collegescorecard.edu.gov as a starting point to evaluate schools. This site will give you information on cost per year of school, graduation and retention rates and gainful employment after graduation. Then when fully informed, do what needs to be done for you and yours.

I agree it's about finding the proper school. Many offices in my area will not accept NP students from some for profit schools. I personally had to retake a course in my BSN-DNP journey making it 4 years instead of 3. I was devastated at first, but having graduated 5/21/16 it doesn't matter now. No one can ever take my degree that I earned through hard work and perseverance.

Having said all of that I could have gone to medical school after 4 years on 2 Associates, 2 yrs on the BSN, & 4 on the DNP. As an MD, my salary would also be 2-3x what I will see in primary care. So weigh all options and really do your research. Don't give up on your education. Only you know the details so only you know what needs to be done.

Yes, you could have completed medical school in that amount of time, but you would now be at the point of starting a lengthy residency rather than being done and entering practice (and it probably would have cost you a lot more :)).

Your sarcasm is not artful. Your tone is palpably hostile. And your cadre of "like' minds is disturbing.

But your own harsh words and assumptions further make my point far better than I ever could Mom of 4.

The problem in Healthcare now is that field is filled with total idiots that believe that being an ass is the same as being real. My two cents. ...

If that's how you feel about healthcare in general, why would you want to get further into it? If I felt that way about healthcare, I would be looking to do something else entirely.

I'm not sure of what sarcasm you speak? I agree it is very much the program that's chosen. As I stated, there are colleagues that will not accept students from for profit schools to precept.

However, since you are intent on having sarcasm perhaps you need to look in the mirror. Maybe ask yourself, Is everyone on All Nurses really trying to get to me? When you point your finger at others giving legitimate advice remember you still have 3 pointing back at you.

Why would you like this. It was directed to Mom to 4. So "dreammmm" away.

I liked it on accident while trying to hit the quote option on my phone. I am Mom to 4, DNP-FNP one of the alphabet soup nurses of whom you spoke earlier lol.
