nurse to patient ratio

Published

Hi, was just curious, are there nurse patient ratios for adult acute care facilities in North Carolina? is there a maximun number of patients per nurse? Currently here in california I am spoiled w a max of 5. In Massachusetts we could have 8-12.

There is no law or rule. It is not unusual to have 7 patients and I think that is outrageous.

would depend on where in NC you are...have heard of as many as 11:1 in one facility (hospital) on a med/surg/tele unit...the facilty, where I am working has maximum of 6:1...but that doesn't mean anythng when one takes into consideration " acuity "

The large teaching hospital on the East side of the state is a magnet hospital, and generally has excellent nurse-patient ratios.

On the acute regular med/surg unit in Southeastern NC its 6 patient from 7a-7p. For 7p-7a its 7patients.

I too would like to know about the ratio's. I lived in San Diego and had a max of 6 patients. I worked nights so we had one more patient than the days. Good thing, Arnold did not win. LOL

I work nights in Asheville. If we are REALLY lucky and staffed beautifully we have 4:1. Some nights I have had 6 patients. Those are the nights you pray a lot and thrive on team work.

OMG!!! you are sooooooooooo lucky!!! I just started nursing, as an RN, in March. They put me on a tele unit, which I like, it's very interesting, but they give me 10-12 pts!!!! ARGH!!!!! Tell me how the hell I'm suppossed to give pt care the way I should, it's rediculous. I'm actually debating on looking for a new job, just nervous how other hospitals will look at me, maybe they'll think I didn't give it a chance.

Oh well, I was just reading some blogs, and had to let you know how lucky you are!!

There are no nurse-to-patient ratios for acute care facilities in North Carolina. There are no nurse-to-patient ratios for acute care facilities in 49 of the 50 states.

California is the only state that has a mandated nurse-to-patient ratio. Hopefully, this is the straightforward answer you were seeking...
