Nurse Managers...Please Respond

Published

Hello

I am wanting to apply to LPN school. I am wanting to get my lpn license, and work in a facility that will pay for my further education.

I have heard LPN's are getting phased out in some hospitals.

But yet I also read that LPN's do get jobs and ARE in demand, just depends on where I want to work.

So, I guess I am asking...are LPN's in demand? Or will I be wasting a year of my life?

It depends on the facility and the unit. There are some units that are or have phased out LVN's ,but they are still in demand. It's been going around for years that LVN's and ADN's would be phased out, but it hasn't happened yet. No, I'm not a nurse manager, just an old timer.

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

I live in the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area. LVNs are in hot demand here; in fact, there are usually 4 pages of LVN job listings on the advertisement section of our local newspapers every Sunday morning.

There are still hospital jobs for LVNs in this area, but they pay poorly due to the low demand. Nursing homes in this metro area tend to pay significantly higher LVN salaries than hospitals, so I choose to work at nursing homes. By the way, I am not a nurse manager. All of the ADONs (assistant directors of nursing) at my place of employment are LVNs.

I see the same, LPN's are in BIG demand but mostly for LTC. I am not a Nurse Manager (nor do I play one on TV).

You are better off, getting school loans to complete the LPN to RN program ou are interested in; it sounds like that is your goal. For loan forgiveness, work in a high needs area that is Rural and you may qualify for the Loan Forgiveness. Ask yor lending institution for qualifying areas in your state.

Specializes in med/surg, telemetry, IV therapy, mgmt.

Well, I have been a nurse manager until recently and we did use LVNs. It's true that LVNs are probably used more in nursing homes. I suggest you go to the website of your state board of nursing and see if there are any scholarships or job postings there for LPNs. You can also check websites of publications that specilize in nursing jobs like Nursing Spectrum, Advance for Nurses and Working World to see what job postings there are for LPNs. These publications have regional publishings of nursing jobs.
