Nurse Jobs In Canada Questions

World Canada

Published

hi. Good Day! im a british citizen of filipino descent working as a nurse in a big NHS hospital here in London. im currently waiting for an application from an online recruiter of nurses from British Columbia. the advice i want to seek from anyone is:

1. do i need to apply for a nurse registration now or do i wait for my job application?

2. what type of exam do i need to take before i actually work there? or will i be given a "provisional" license to practice?

3. do you need a diferrent license if you are going to practice in a diferrent province or territory?

4. what's the best state to work in?

To RGN1 & Cocoy 2Go,

i am pestering them right now. and they have been helpful so far. when i received my eligbility letter from CARNA i was "given" two options before i can start work there. and the "best" option i saw was to take this SEC exam on mental health. what is this all about? is that exam hard? did CARNA decided on those options basing on their assessment of my documents?

nb. i've started my police clearance thing. would the LMO be the agency's job to follow-up?

Hi Gino

What was the other option? You did not mention it. Are you short of hours for the mental health section? I was not asked to do this SEC exam on mental health. BTW I did my RN training in London so I dont know much about your training in the Philippines re: mental health. I was not asked to do this exam by CARNA.

You need to chase your agency to have the LMO. You will need it as its part of the essential documents for the issue of your work permit.

I am getting ready to go ...still packing my stuff in boxes..suitcase to be filled. M&S has a 20% discount yesterday so I got the thermal vests and thermal long underwears as well as thermal socks. I bought loads of stuff online. Just hope they will be delivered before I leave. I know there is no M&S store there in Calgary.

I am getting nervous and edgy now. I am worried cos I am giving up my Band 6 job and I am at the end of payscale for Band 6...I am paid more than my ward manager. Some of my colleagues are just surprised that i am leaving everything to go abroad. Is it worth it? I will tell them in a year's time.

Regards

Ibby I am sure you will find it is worth it a lot sooner than in 12 months. Yes it is nerve racking but what an experience and I have no doubts you will settle

We moved to NS knowing nobody and everyone we have met has made us feel so welcome. Canadians are very friendly and will point you in the direction you need

There's also plenty of us who've gone before to help you. I'm even in the same hospital you'll be coming to - so don't be afraid to ask for help!

I'm really surprised at how settled I feel. I keep waiting for this "homesickness" to set in......but nothing!! I don't miss London one tiny little bit!!

Of course if you want to bring me a pressie a large tub of marmite will do :rollI can get it - it's just 4x the price!:D

Seriously - you'll be fine I'm sure. Now get back to that packing!!!!

I think she'd like a pot as big as your head, Ibby.

Hi Cocoy2Go

the other option was basically to go to Canada and then take the exam there right there which i think for me is not practical at the moment. i think those 2 options was given to me 'cause maybe i had little experience with mental health patients.

today i had posted back the signed contract and the United Nurses of Alberta factsheet back to my agency. also along with my Police certificate form too. i have yet to hear from them as to what is my next move.

i know it's a big move but because on my part i am just fed up with working on my ward so i'm doing this step-by-step and as smooth as possible. i have started to sell my stuff here (from DVD's to my desktop PC to my freeview box, etc.) and i plan to buy atleast 1 more coat or thick jacket during the sales and maybe a pair of shoes/trainers.

did you have to wait for 3 months before you got your work permit?
